Brits ban bigots
Brits ban bigots
by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

The British government has banned several US citizens from entering the United Kingdom. British Home Secretary Jacqui Smith announced the list of banned individuals on May 5.

"If you can't live by the rules that we live by, the standards and the values that we live by, we should exclude you from this country and, what's more, now we will make public those people that we have excluded," she said.

Of the 22 people on the list, six are US citizens, and one has dual US and Israeli citizenship.

Prominent on the list are Topeka, Kansas pastor Fred Phelps and his daughter Shirley Phelps-Roper, who are accused by the British Home Office of "fostering hatred which might lead to inter-community violence."

Known for his trademark slogan "God hates fags," Phelps and members of his Westboro Baptist Church are notorious for picketing Gay events, including the funeral of Matthew Shepard in 1998. Phelps has also picketed a number of military funerals, stating that the US is "a sodomite nation of flag-worshiping idolators."

Phelps has also made anti-Semitic, anti-Catholic, anti-Irish, and anti-Swedish statements. His daughter Shirley is part of the leadership of Westboro Baptist Church.

Also on the banned list is talk-radio host Michael Savage, who is officially "considered to be engaging in unacceptable behaviour by seeking to provoke others to serious criminal acts and fostering hatred which might lead to inter-community violence."

Besides his anti-Gay remarks, Savage is noted for calling autism a "racket" that poor parents use to cheat the government out of disability benefits. In 2006 he urged his listeners to burn Mexican flags to protest immigration to the US. He has also mocked Islam and Roman Catholicism

Other US citizens on the list are neo-Nazi leader Erich Gliebe, and ex-Klansman and current Stormfront leader Stephen Donald Black.

The two remaining Americans on the list are banned because of their Mid-East affiliations. Abdul Alim Musa is a US-born Muslim activist who has donated to Hamas, and praised Palestinian suicide bombers as "heroes." Mike Guzovsky is a follower of the late Rabbi Meir Kahane and lives in an illegal Jewish settlement on the West Bank. He has dual US and Israeli citizenship.

Britain is particularly sensitive to inter-communal hostilities because it has become the home of very diverse immigrants from former British colonies. Many are Muslims, and many come originally from Africa and the Mid-East. The white nationalist National Front was active in Britain in the 1970s and 1980s, its rallies often ending in attacks on immigrant communities.
