AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR
BRYAN PALMER TO SPEAK ON
U.S. RADICAL JAMES CANNON
Northwest residents will have the rare opportunity to hear scholar Bryan Palmer speak on "James P. Cannon: A Native Son's Revolutionary Road" at a May Day celebration on Saturday, May 9, at 7:30 p.m.
Palmer's new biography, James P. Cannon and the Origins of the American Revolutionary Left, 1890-1928, opens with Cannon's small-town Kansas origins and introduction to the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). Trained by IWW agitator "Big Bill" Haywood, Cannon developed into a soapbox orator and labor leader who road the rails across the Midwest to organize strikes and build unions. He took a very public antiwar stance during the first World War. Cannon went on to become a founder of U.S. socialism. He died in 1974.
The event, sponsored by the Freedom Socialist Party, will be held at New Freeway Hall, 5018 Rainier Ave. S. There is a $3 door donation. The program will be preceded by a "Nothing's-too-good-for-the-working-class" buffet served at 6 p.m. for a $10 donation (labor exchanges available). The evening celebrates May Day, the international workers' holiday, inspired by the 1886 Chicago Haymarket riots and the fight for the eight-hour day.

THE CIVIL RIGHTS ISSUES

This history is told through the words of people - including Sterling, City Councilmember Tom Rasmussen, Seattle Gay News editor George Bakan and King County AIDS Program Director Bob Wood - who lived and worked on the front lines in the community.
