PROP 8 DAY-OF-DECISION ACTION AT WESTLAKE CENTER The day the California Supreme Court rules on Proposition 8, cities throughout the country will gather in celebration or protest of their decision. If the court overturns Prop 8 we will celebrate our growing equality. If the court upholds Prop 8, it will deny LGBTQ people their right to marry in California and we will protest. Either way, we will take the national movement forward by working together for equality right here in Washington State. The action will begin at 5:30 p.m. on the day the decision is announced. AN EXHIBIT ON WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE IN SEATTLE Through May 31, the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, located in the former Cadillac Hotel at 319 2nd Ave. S., is presenting a tribute to Catherine Blaine (1829-1908), the suffragist who opened Seattle's first school in 1854 in a house at the intersection of what is now First Avenue and Madison St. The museum will be open daily from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. A special presentation will be held on May 9 at 2 p.m. (a presentation on Fay Fuller, the first woman to climb Mt. AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR BRYAN PALMER TO SPEAK ON U.S. RADICAL JAMES CANNON Northwest residents will have the rare opportunity to hear scholar Bryan Palmer speak on "James P. Cannon: A Native Son's Revolutionary Road" at a May Day celebration on Saturday, May 9, at 7:30 p.m. Palmer's new biography, James P. Cannon and the Origins of the American Revolutionary Left, 1890-1928, opens with Cannon's small-town Kansas origins and introduction to the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). Trained by IWW agitator "Big Bill" Haywood, Cannon developed into a soapbox orator and labor leader who road the rails across the Midwest to organize strikes and build unions. He took a very public antiwar stance during the first World War. Cannon went on to become a founder of U.S. socialism. He died in 1974. The event, sponsored by the Freedom Socialist Party, will be held at New Freeway Hall, 5018 Rainier Ave. S. There is a $3 door donation.
