SGN Staff Writer President Barack Obama will sign a proclamation commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall rebellion in New York City, according to Gay and human rights activist Mike Petrelis, who announced the news Thursday on his blog, Petrelis Files (mpetrelis.blogspot.com). Back in March Petrelis asked Patricia Nell Warren, author of the classic Gay novel The Front Runner and civil rights advocate, to draft a proclamation he could submit to the White House for the president to sign. Warren agreed and the draft was in the mail. Warren wrote an SGN exclusive for the March 27, Vol. 37, Issue 13 edition where she pointed out, "Barack Obama is full of surprises, and nowhere more than on the subject of LGBT rights." Since then Petrelis spoke with Brian Bond, an openly Gay man in the White House Office of Public Liaison. He asked Bond whether or not the LGBT community could depend on the president to build on the draft. Bond received word Thursday - yes, a draft is being prepared for June. The June proclamation is the first since 2000. "Interesting that Bill Clinton issues a presidential proclamation honoring LGBT pride month in June 2000, his last year in the Oval Office, and Obama is getting ready to put forward a similar proclamation in his first year as president," said Petrelis. "Nice bit of progress!" |
