Rabbit Hole
By David Linsay-Abaire
ReACT Theatre
Through May 31

Pulitzer Prize sounds so chic! How does one win one? Well, David Lindsay-Abaire figured it out and won the 2007 prize for Drama with his play, Rabbit Hole. It's a suitably intriguing title. Then, ReAct Theatre pulled a rabbit out of the hat and snagged the Seattle premiere, bringing us this fresh-from-Broadway drama. Lindsay-Abaire is working on the film version, coming out soon at a theater near you.

This is a quiet, contemporary story. The pathos could be compared, in tone, to A Long Day's Journey into Night, although not quite as intense. Becca and Howie are eight months into coping with the accidental death of their four-year-old son, Danny. It's that uneasy time where people around them are wondering if they've "gotten over it already," and figuring out what else to do with their lives. Howie seems to be coping fairly well, but Becca hasn't moved on enough to even have sex with Howie, yet. Such tensions easily justify the many broken marriages after tragedies like these.

David Hseih, artistic director, helms this moving production, with Kelly Hyde and Gordon Hendrickson playing Becca and Howie. They are very "American" folks. They have the nice home that they love, Howie has a decent job, Becca was able to stay home with their son. Becca's sister, Izzy (Ellen Dessler), and mother, Nat (Walayn Sharples), live close enough to visit often. Dessler gets to play the n'er-do-well sister, who drinks, gets into fights in bars, and generally doesn't manage her life very well. Sharples is the sharp tongued mother who picks at emotional scars, says stuff you don't want to hear, and doesn't quite shut up. Hyde and Hendrickson have nice chemistry, and both are sympathetic characters you can feel for. This couple is living a life of quiet desperation, at this point.

As the play unfolds, we learn that the dog (unseen) ran into the street after a squirrel and Danny ran after the dog, and a young teenager, Jason Willette (Alex Adisorn), is the poor sod who hit Danny. Adisorn is clearly anguished and hesitant about his desire for forgiveness and absolution. He is a lovely counterpoint to the parents, also a victim of the accident, and harboring his own self-blame.

What makes the subject matter stand out is an examination of where people get comfort. Becca's meddling mother tells a story of the famous Kennedy family and their travails, making the point that one of them died due to an inability to find comfort. Becca is unable to find comfort through religion, and has lost her faith. Will Becca find comfort? Will she find her way back to God? Will their marriage fall apart? The play unfolds with those questions, and asks us to consider where we would find comfort in a situation like this. Becca finds some unlikely comfort in science.

The set is a simple, nicely dressed house, with kitchen, living room and bedroom. Becca bakes up a storm and is always feeding people treats, so there are bunches of luscious desserts served. Sound designer Roger Tang, and lighting designer Murray McKay provide subtle support. Prepare to eat afterward; you're likely to be hungry.
