Nunya Business auction raises money to fight "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"
Nunya Business auction raises money to fight "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"
by Shaun Knittel - SGN Staff Writer

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence held a two-part auction on May 9 raising over $1,000 for the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) aiding their fight to end "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

The event, coined Nunya Business, is a play on words - as in "It's none of your business if I'm Gay" when entering the armed services. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence were decked out in their normal garb with a military twist for the occasion.

The auctions were held at C.C. Attle's on Capitol Hill from 5 - 7 p.m. Attendees of the public auction paid money for the clothes off a military-themed model's back - literally. The Sisters even auctioned off the model's socks, eventually stripping the model of their unmentionables behind the veil of a Sister's headdress. During the highly entertaining public auction participants had the opportunity to outbid each other at a silent auction. The pool table was turned into an auction display garnished with real articles of military dress. People bid on coveralls, combat boots, and a Desert Storm teddy bear, to name but a few items.

All proceeds were donated to the Single Service Defense Network, a non-profit, legal services, watchdog and policy organization dedicated to ending discrimination against and harassment of military personnel affected by, "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" according to the organizations website. SLDN provides free and confidential legal services to all those impacted by the current "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy.

Among attendees Saturday night were former servicemembers, some of whom were ousted out of active military service due to their sexuality and the implementation of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."
