A Dyke About Town: Progress for "significant otters"
by Mercy Moosemuzzle SGN Contributing Writer

Governor Signs Domestic Partnership Bills
Mercy and Cuteness were very excited to go to the final action on the new domestic partnerships bills at Montlake Community Center last week. Cuteness particularly liked it that there were a bunch of kids there. In his comments, Representative Jamie Pedersen held his son Trig on his shoulders and explained that the child's day care center had come to the event. That seemed to fit well with the theme of acknowledging Gay and Lesbian families. Cuteness moved up to get a photo of Governor Gregoire, who she admires a lot. Mercy joined her, leaving Cuteness' purse behind. Cuteness pointed out that that was a goof. Mercy's ass was saved by the fact that the Secret Service kept an eye on the bag. They both got pens the governor had used to sign the bills, souvenirs of progress.

One of these bills fills in the other state marriage rights the previous legislation on this topic didn't cover. Others deal with pension rights for the partners of teachers and death benefits for firefighters and police people. Mercy and Cuteness feel it doesn't make any difference whether relationships are called marriages or domestic partnerships (DP), as long as DPs have the same rights as marriages. Mercy has a friend who calls his DP his significant otter, which is language she likes to use for Cuteness.

Commitment Ceremony
In celebration of the bills for DP rights being signed, Mercy and Cuteness took a dance lesson from MaryLee Lykes to prepare for their commitment ceremony. They have in mind dancing blues to a nice slow love song, so are practicing. The issue is that Mercy keeps forgetting she is supposed to follow. She'll get it. They found MaryLee's instruction very helpful and encouraging. Others who are joining the ceremony trend might want to contact her at www.lykestodance.com/index.html.

Dos Fallopia
Mercy and Cuteness laughed their butts off at Peggy Platt and Lisa Koch's Deja Poo show at Theater Off Jackson. Mercy's favorite skit was "Shakespeare for Dummies," in which Lisa Koch, as Sister Mary Agnes Labia, instructed two audience members in doing scenes from Romeo and Juliet, while translating the language to the audience. She also appreciated that Peggy Platt's slam poet has added a poem about women in basketball. The duo's Heartwood Mac had the audience in gales of laughter. The Spudds doing a takeoff on "The Big Valley" was a lot of fun.

Marriage of Figaro
Cuteness has seen too many performances of Marriage of Figaro, so she declined to join Mercy in her standing-room trick, watching it at Seattle Opera. On the other hand, it is Assonance Blankverse's favorite, so she saw it twice. Christine Brandes' voice shone as Susanna. Oren Gradus' Figaro was full of life. Mercy wants you to remember standing-room tickets only cost $12.

Sweet Cruises
Mercy is very happy to have heard there is a new Lesbian cruise company called Sweet Cruses. Their inaugural voyage is going to be to the Caribbean from New Orleans in November. Mercy and Cuteness are going. One thing Mercy likes about the company is that they do carbon offsets, such as planting trees, to make the cruise carbon-free. Another is that they provide opportunities to do volunteer work along the trip.

Mercy asked cofounder Shannon Wentworth what inspired her and partner Jen Rainin in creating an organization with those elements. She said, "Sweet was inspired by a conversation we had about the idea of traveling the world and making it better along the way. We're both devoted to putting our money and our time where our values are, and we both have a deep desire to create an ethical, eco-friendly and successful business that entertains, uplifts and empowers the Lesbian community."

Mercy asked her what affect the economy is having on them. She said, "The economy is impacting everyone. It's in hard times like these that companies and people get the opportunity to demonstrate their values. At Sweet, we're working to create lifetime relationships with our guests. With that in mind, we created a 12-month, no interest, no fees payment plan for our Sweet Caribbean Cruise guests. That makes it $71 per person per month. To make our cruise more affordable, we're offering third and fourth guests free in staterooms. With the monthly payment plan, that's $36 per person per month for foursomes and $48 per person per month for threesomes. Also, our cancellation policies are some of the sweetest in the travel business."

Mercy and Cuteness are headed off on a mainstream cruise her ex and a group of friends put together to Alaska next week. Mercy was surprised how much tax, insurance, and miscellaneous costs added to the price. One thing she appreciates about Sweet is that the prices they quote include everything.

Check out their website at discoversweet.rtrk.com. Note that the threesome and foursome free offer expires June 30. Mercy would like you to join her and Cuteness on a trip that truly looks like it will be a dykely good time.

Coming Up
Next week, Mercy and Cuteness put the honeymoon before the wedding, cruising to Alaska. Because some members of the group wanted to see Hubbard Glacier, they won't be going up the proverbial inside passage. It should be fun.
