True story: I'm wandering around Pioneer Square for First Thursday, checking out the art and decide to take a gander down this flight of stairs - nothing like the promise of an "adventure" to get my blood racing and make me take risks - only to find, after turning several corners in the cobblestone-walled building, that I've been there before. That this is the place I've been having recurring dreams about, where "the hippie people" in those dreams hang out. Cue the X-Files music and you have the idea of how I felt: creepy and fun at the same time, and hella cool, too.
Okay, so that little bit of ethereal otherworldliness wasn't my whole art walk experience, but the whole thing was kind of magical in that "new place I haven't seen before" kind of way.
If you do manage to get down to Pioneer Square (no, there aren't robbers hanging on every corner like the news makes it seem, but, yes, do keep your wits about you, as it is Pioneer Square, after all), do not miss the eclectic and fun show of works by Gay artist Stuart Gullstrand, who has "fetishes" that I see as Mad Max meets Terminator (the future they always show in the series of films) meets hip urban chic, only in a more accessible, less pretentious way. Vintage kitchen utensils and odd objects are rooted to wood boards and put on display in Murphy's mix, which is just what is says it is, in a wonderfully vintage emporium of everything way. I loved this place with its mix of art, tchotchkes and art by artist Russ Morgan, who has found-object chandeliers to die for, and will definitely go back. Located at 314 First Avenue S., it's a find, believe me.
Also check out work by Daphne Minkoff at Linda Hodges gallery, and go upstairs to see the magnificent sculpture by David French, which I found to be the best reason for visiting Linda Hodges last week. Located at 316 First Avenue S.
Finally, let yourself be drawn down the stairs at 214 First Avenue S., and, believe me, even if you don't have recurring dreams about this place, the little studios like Tai Designs, The Pottery School - where you can see potters applying their craft in the large window - and Juan Alonso Studio will charm you, and you can bring home some affordable and one-of-a-kind art, too. Worth the trip to Pioneer Square, believe me.
And, closer to those living on the Hill, do check out the new works by Latino artists in their newest exhibit at Vermillion Gallery (located in the block with another kind of "art" place, The Crypt), and the one at Grey Gallery in the same block on 11th, next to Purr.
