Entre Hermanos, a nonprofit organization for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Latino Community, crowned a new Mr. Gay Latino, Mr. Lesbiana, and Miss Gay Latina at Town Hall Seattle May 23.
The annual Latino Pageant is the signature event for Entre Hermanos and the organization's biggest fundraiser, according to Event Coordinator and Outreach Manager Sergio Miranda. The pageant brings together the Latino LGBT community and their allies as well as youth and adults to socialize. In order to make sure everyone in attendance feels welcome, the pageant is emceed in Spanish and English and the flyers are printed in both languages as well. In a statement posted on the organization's website, Entre Hermanos says the pageant is an attempt to recognize the talent and exuberance of Latino culture, desire to succeed, and take their place in the spectrum of cultures living in the community. The organization recognizes members of the community who support the Latino Community with awards at the annual event.
"People are always excited and waiting for the pageant and who will win the crown each year," Miranda told SGN. "We have people arrive from Portland and Yakima. The showroom is always a full house."
The 2009 Latino Pageant, hosted by Latino Drag Queens La Gorda and Isabella, had a total of nine participants: three participants for Mr. Gay Latino, one for Mr. Lesbiana, and five for Miss Gay Latina. The pageant participants were judged based on a talent competition, evening gown competition, and how well they answered a question.
This year's winners are Mr. Gay Latino 2009, Raul Morales, Mr. Lesbiana 2009 Karen, and Miss Gay Latina 2009, Alexandra La Piere. The duties that accompany the crown and sash are to represent the LGBT Latino community with dignity throughout the year, raise money for Entre Hermanos programs, march in the Pride Parade, perform at Noche Latina Sundays at Neighbours, as well as attend social and cultural events for the LGBT community.
Since 1994, Entre Hermanos has worked hard to promote the health and wellbeing of the Latino LGBT community in a culturally, socially, and emotionally appropriate environment, creating a model conductive to the needs of the community. They encourage participation in programs that provide support, prevention, and treatment for HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, and all other types of diseases. Entre Hermanos provides the community with educational, recreational, cultural, and social services. Their goal is to build the Latino community's capacity with the necessary tools to achieve a better quality of life. For more information visit www.entrehermanos.org.
