Gary Mooney, 1953-2009
Gary Mooney was one of the world's most wonderful people. He was sweet and kind and gentle and loyal and caring. He had an enormous heart and was a steadfast friend to many. He enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest.

Gary was a southern boy, born in Memphis, TN, 9/21/1953. He passed away 5/25/09 in Seattle, WA, from lung cancer. He spent most of his growing-up years in orphanages, where he unfortunately suffered severe and bloody beatings in part due to academic challenges caused by dyslexia. Despite suffering this cruelty at a formative age, he was not a bitter man and always managed to see the good qualities in everyone.

Gary loved hosting BBQs and camping in the Cascades. He especially enjoyed annual Memorial Day weekend Knights of Malta camp-outs. For many years he volunteered at the Pike Market Medical Clinic, accompanying people in need to medical appointments, even when he was nearing the end of his own life.

Gary loved animals and the last years of his life were enriched by his canine companions, Memphis and Tennessee, and his feline companion, Renegade. Gary was a great gardener and had many birdfeeders in his yard; he drew an amazing number of hummingbirds, who visited all year long.

Gary was a veteran of the US Navy.

Gary leaves a huge hole in his wake and the many who loved him will forever feel his absence. The only consolation is knowing that their lives were touched by someone who truly was their angel on earth.

Gary is survived by his daughter Nicole Flores (Simi), grandson Angel Flores, son Shaun, siblings Karen Lee Crosby, Kay Smith (Paul), Kenneth Mooney (Cheryl), Donna Lynn Gorman (Rob) and Carlos Mooney (Betty), many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews and scores of friends. He was predeceased by his son Mark.

A memorial gathering will be held at Martins Off Madison, June 7, 2009, from 1-3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please remember Gary with a donation to the Knights of Malta (P.O. Box 21052, Seattle, WA 98111). You may also honor him with your kindness, your open heartedness and your embracing of ALL people!
