LARRY KRAMER ADDRESSES THE COMMUNITY

I implore your three organizations, Lambda Legal of Los Angeles, national center for Lesbian rights, and ACLU LGBT project, to not interfere with the Olson/Boies case. You will only botch up what they are trying to achieve. You have thus far not achieved it on your own and with your own tactics, so why are you trying to kibosh someone who has come along with fresh new energy, ideas, and clout? You are only behaving in the worst possible bitchy way, the way Gay groups can fall victim to when their feelings are hurt. Keep your noses out of it, will you please? I beg of you. You should be cheering these guys from the sidelines and showering them with gratitude for coming along and trying to help us in our hugely enfeebled position, brought on in great part by our inability to work together effectively ourselves. You are only perpetuating this useless behavior.

Larry Kramer

SUPPORTING DOW CONSTANTINE

On Sunday, the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, Seattle jubilantly erupted in its annual celebration of LGBTQ pride. Despite the hoopla, however, we must remember that the members of our LGBTQ community remain second-class citizens even today.

At the parade, members of the King County Democrats held portraits of the elected leaders with a long history of championing Gay rights. Pictures of Chris Gregoire, Joe McDermott, Jim McDermott, Deb Eddy and Ed Murray all swayed in the hands of exuberant Democrats alongside that of only one candidate in the upcoming race for King County Executive.

That candidate, Dow Constantine, has battled for the equal rights of all citizens harder and longer than any candidate in this race. Since his days in the state legislature, this has been his fight. He co-sponsored the Washington State Civil Rights Act, led the opposition to "DOMA," and pushed through numerous pieces of legislation banning discrimination of Gays. SEAMEC, an organization that rates candidates based on their support for LGBTQ issues, has consistently recognized Dow with an AAAAA rating - their highest honor.

Though 40 years removed from Stonewall, we cannot forget to recognize the leaders in a struggle that remains unfinished.

PRIDE DECORATION THANK-YOUS

A great big thank-you goes out to the decorations sponsor and volunteer decorators of the 2009 Capitol Hill/Broadway Pride Festival Saturday, June 27. The rainbow arches, umbrellas and long-stem flower balloons were the perfect touch to a perfect day. We couldn't have done it without you.

A heartfelt thank-you goes to Kevin McCarthy, owner of Checkmasters on Broadway, for your continued support of our Pride decorations on Broadway 11 of the past 12 years. It's this kind of community spirit and business leadership that will hopefully inspire other businesses on Broadway to do the same.

And a very special thank-you to the wonderful tenants and friends who volunteered to help decorate the Pride Festival with so much heart and enthusiasm:

Joseph Morgan, Kit Bond, Shawn Cormick, Donna, David Hodgkinson, Steve Horning, Stacy Schwing, Paul Laslie, Craig Kjos, Darien Ilar, David Rios, Brian (of N. Carolina), and especially Stu Hidalgo, who has volunteered to help build, secure, and display the decorations on Broadway for several years.

All of you contributed greatly to the Festival's huge success, and many in our community are truly grateful.

Lee Serrano
