Seattle Stonewall soccer team to represent America in 2009 Outgames

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Staff Writer

Over the past couple of years, Stonewall F.C., Seattle's premier Gay men's soccer team, has refocused its energy as a highly competitive team with a dream to win gold on the world stage. This week, 18 Seattle Stonewall athletes embarked for the 2009 Outgames in Copenhagen, Denmark to make that dream a reality.

"We are going to compete against European teams with a lot of history," said eight-year Stonewall athlete Stephen Nick. "We are the only soccer team from America to compete in the 2009 Outgames."

Throughout the year, the team hosted a number of fundraising events to offset the cost of expenses for the Copenhagen stay. The Elite bar and Poco Wine Room helped sponsor the team.

"The Elite has been an amazing supporter for us," said Nick. "They've really helped out so more people on the team will get the opportunity to experience the Outgames."

Men's soccer is a highly competitive sport. Team Captain Jared Auckland said if he has his way, Stonewall "will come home with the gold."

"I can't wait to compete. There's no doubt we are going to have a good time," Auckland told SGN.

According to team officials, Stonewall has a history of representing Seattle and the U.S. by sending players to the Gay Games and Outgames. This will be Nick's first time in Copenhagen, but not his first time competing at the world level.

"This will be my second Outgames. The first was in Montreal," he said. "I also participated in the Gay Games in Sydney."

He told SGN that this year's team is the "youngest team we've ever gone over with," and is expecting the team to do well.

"I've played [soccer] since I was 10 years old," he said. "Soccer has basically been my life since that age. I play at least 11 months out of the year."

Other than just a competitive sport, Nick says joining up with the Stonewall soccer team was a great way to meet people when he moved to Seattle from New York. He said it is a great way to get people out of the bar, and acts as a catapult to meet like-minded people.

The team is scheduled to play July 27, 28, 30, and 31, and will get Sunday, Wednesday, and Saturday to enjoy Copenhagen and check out the city's sights.
