CARA barbeque for a good cause

by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid - SGN A&E Writer

Enjoy good food? Enjoy karaoke with fun people and lots of laughter along with knowing you're supporting a very good community group? Then you should put on your summer best and get yourself to the CARA (Communities Against Rape and Abuse) offices this Friday, July 24 at 5 p.m. for their annual summer barbecue/fundraiser. The emphasis is more on the fun of the barbecue and yummy things are provided - the mac and cheese someone made and brought last time remains on my mind in a special place reserved for food that tastes like it was made by angels.

The group has been standing fast against these tough times, still putting on their monthly hip hop/poetry/music evening, Ladies First, and the occasional CD release party for the talented women in this primarily women of color group.

Also, the group is a good role model for every other group who hopes to make real progress in continuing to battle right-wing efforts to defeat GLBT victories, and to put a halt to youth violence in a more positive, life-affirming way than is being offered by the standard political avenues. The group welcomes donations at any time and has a number of items for sale now, like the radical purple T-shirt with CARA's logo and mission statement printed on it, for a mere handful of shekels - 20, to be exact.

The offices are located at 801 23rd Avenue S., 23rd and Dearborn, and the group has a MySpace page (www.myspace.com/seattleladiesfirst) if you need further information.

Another worthy event undoubtedly offering much in the way of both entertainment and an alternative political view is the new play, Pieces of Us: How the Lost Find Home, premiering at the Rainier Valley Cultural Center July 23 through 31 at 7:30 p.m. RVCC is located at 3515 S. Alaska St., in Columbia City. I suppose you could use the new train to get there, but be prepared to walk a bit, as the word from at least one bus driver I rode with last week is the stops are about seven or more miles apart. Taking the number 7 bus is probably a better bet, to save on gas and go greener.

The play is part of a program called SEEDArts, is part of the SummerSTAGE project that enables youth from the Rainier Valley to produce a play they work on for six weeks before presenting it to the public and is produced by local playwright Maria Glanz, who has had many hits on Seattle stages in the past. For more information, call (206) 775-7169, or go to www.seedseattle.org/seedarts.
