Remembering Ed Ruby

The Knights of Malta are holding a Celebration of Life for our friend, Ed Ruby. Saturday, August 22, 2009 from 3-5 p.m. at the Elite Tavern. Please join us in celebrating the life and good times of Ed Ruby.

I was surprised and saddened to learn of Ed Ruby's passing a short time ago.

Ed and I went back a long way together as friends, beginning in the early '60s when we both lived in Tacoma. We usually saw each other at The Sandbox, one of the three bars in Tacoma then.

Over later years, Ed would tell the tale of his supposedly "first time" when he invited me home. Turned out later he had a friend sleeping in the bedroom and so supposedly stifled my "screams" with a pillow on the couch.

In later years I moved to Seattle, as did Ed, where we frequented the "old" Elite, where in later years he helped out as a beerback and with stocking. During one late night he was savagely attacked outside and had a lengthy recovery.

In these last years we saw each other occasionally at other bars on the hill.

I am dedicating this poem to Ed and to everyone when we miss seeing friends as time goes on.

Around the corner I have a friend,

In this great city that has no end.

Yet days go by and weeks rush on,

And before I know it, a year is gone.

And I never see my old friend's face;

For life is a swift and terrible race.

He knows I like him just as well

As in the days when I "rang his bell"

And he rang mine - we were younger then -

And now we are busy, tired men -

Tired of playing those foolish games

Tired of trying to make our names

"Tomorrow," I say, "I will call Jim

Just to show that I'm thinking of him"

But tomorrow comes - and tomorrow goes

And the distance between us grows and grows.

Around the corner! Yet "miles" away&

"Here's a telegram, sir."

"Jim died today."

And that's what we get - maybe deserve in the end

Around the corner, a vanished friend.

With fondest memories,
Lenny Larson
