Seattle Stonewall Football Club are world champions

by James Whitely - SGN Contributing Writer

On August 16, the boys of Seattle Stonewall Football Club (FC) crowded the Elite for their welcome home party - and their victory party. Stonewall FC won the gold medal at the OutGames in Copenhagen, Denmark July 31, a victory they were fully expecting.

Stonewall FC played six games total at the OutGames, squaring off against Denmark in the finals at Valby Stadium. The Danish goalkeeper was the biggest obstacle for Stonewall FC, as they were able to maintain control of the midfield throughout the game's entirety and shut down the Danish offense. However, center midfield player Jared Auckland was able to score the team's two goals that gave them their victory - one in the first half, the other in the second. The 2-0 score made Stonewall FC the World OutGames 2009 Champions.

When asked if the team was expecting to win the gold, Steve Nick, who plays defense, quickly replied, "We did." For the past 12 months, Stonewall FC has been putting together a solid and stellar team. According to Nick, the strategy for preparing for the OutGames was to "Get the best players from the Seattle area to get the gold." Stonewall FC was intent on forming the best team possible, one that would come home with the gold medal.

The current team lineup consists of more new players than ever, said Nick, who's been with Stonewall FC for eight years. The team had to go through what he called a "rebuilding period."

Stonewall FC's training regiment was fairly simple. "We had several practices where we just worked on field positioning and conditioning, but we pretty much just go to our games and play, and take notes on what we can improve on," Nick told SGN. "Practices are good, but real-life games are a lot better."

When it comes to an American team beating Europeans at soccer, Stonewall FC's blog put it best: "Despite smirks and a cold welcome from the European teams, Stonewall swept the competition and remained the only undefeated team in the tournament."

"They didn't take us seriously because America is not known for soccer," Nick added, "but after we played Mexico, they woke up."

In addition to participating in the closing ceremonies, Stonewall FC attended a dinner the evening of the final game. "Everyone turned and looked at us, and started clapping for us." Nick told SGN.

Stonewall player Chris Breseman also won multiple medals in various track and field events.

Stonewall FC is enormously grateful of the Elite's sponsorship.

"The Elite is our main sponsor, and have been for the past year. Their help made the trip possible for a lot of people on the team. Their support and their backing has been just fantastic. They've kind of taken us on as their family," Nick told SGN. The Elite provided food and copious amounts of Jell-O shots to the team and all customers in attendance during the party.

The team is starting a fundraising campaign for the Cologne, Germany Gay Games 12 months from now. "We'll be working with the Elite again and have various fundraising ideas," said Nick. Stonewall FC is also looking for corporate sponsorship this time around.

Stonewall FC is Seattle's premier Gay men's soccer team. They play throughout the year and assemble a team to compete in regional, national, and international tournaments to include the OutGames, Gay Games, and the International Gay and Lesbian Football Association (IGLFA) World Championships.
