August brought great jazz to Seattle
by E. Joyce Glasgow - SGN A&E Writer

Larry Carlton's memorable playing and solos have been heard and enjoyed by anyone who has listened to Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell, Michael McDonald, or other musical icons. Carlton's tasteful, original and virtuosic contributions to hundreds of recordings have made him one of the most sought-after guitarists in contemporary recording history and has won him three Grammy Awards and 18 Grammy nominations. He performed in a trio setting at the Triple Door on August 19, featuring his son Travis Carlton on electric bass. They performed Carlton's original tunes and some of the other pieces that made his playing famous, including the Steely Dan tune "Josie" and Michael McDonald's "Minute by Minute." Carlton is a brilliant musician. He performed an unforgettable solo version of the Lord's Prayer in honor of the great guitarist and guitar inventor Les Paul, who had passed away the previous week. It was incredibly poignant and moving. Carleton is unassuming, low-key, and down to earth. His two sets of music were very satisfying.

Having been reminded of Steely Dan by Larry Carlton, I was pleased to see that Nearly Dan, Seattle's own Steely Dan tribute band, was going to be playing at the Highway 99 Blues Club a couple of days later on August 21. Nearly Dan is phenomenal! A 12-piece band with four singers, horns, guitars, bass keyboards and drums, this lush-sounding group replicates Steely Dan tunes with as much virtuosity and freshness as the original band, and they are incredibly dynamic and a joy to listen to. They performed the whole Aja album, which is my favorite, as well as other iconic numbers, including "Kid Charlemagne," "Ricki Don't Lose that Number," "Bodhisattva," and "FM." Their lead singer sounds remarkably like Donald Fagen. This is a band not to miss, whether you're a fan of Steely Dan or not, and is comprised of some of the best jazz and blues musicians in Seattle. Their music is fun, energetic, very danceable and totally entertaining.
