Howlingly funny Zombieland is perfect

Zombieland
Now Playing

It's hard to pick out one scene from the new zombie comedy/thriller Zombieland that I liked best, because I loved everything about this movie and laughed my ass off all the way through like a teenaged boy. Still, the opening shot of a rather rotund kid being chased by a ravenous zombie across the length of a football field and another of a soccer mom being chased by her own daughter (as well as the denizens of a birthday party gone horribly wrong, who have all turned to zombies who are still wearing their cute birthday get-up) are at least two that stand out in this wickedly funny film.

With backgrounds of decaying corpses that have been put down by whatever humans have survived the "zombie apocalypse," trashed cars, and other post-apocalyptic detritus, Zombieland starts a lot like Shaun of the Dead - if it had started in the middle, that is.

There are flashback scenes (again, so funny I nearly wet my pants) to explain how the world came to be this carnage, narrated by a geeky World of Warcraft gamer (Jesse Eisenberg), who also gives his "rules for survival" tips from time to time. We know that zombies can get you when you're in a bathroom stall, that you should always buckle your seatbelts (lest you end up like the aforementioned soccer mom, who meets a disastrous end after escaping the zombie children) and that checking the backseat of a car is a good idea in Zombieland, which used to be called America.

Avoiding certain death, our young friend hooks up with an over-the-top zombie killer (Woody Harrelson giving it his best and making it work) who is on a mission to find at least one surviving Twinkie to put a dent in his grieving for his lost son. The two don't get along at first, but agree to disagree on a long road trip with Mr. WoW trying to reach his family in Ohio and Zombie Killer trying to locate a Twinkie. Of course, they kill many slobbering, bloody-mouthed zombies on the way in methods that make Shaun Of The Dead look like a picnic in the park. And they get tricked twice by two other survivors, two bad sisters who are trying to get to an L.A. theme park to hopefully give the younger one a taste of the childhood she's had to sacrifice as they've had to also kill zombies in the way of their dream trip.

Eventually all four (after declaring a truce on betraying each other) end up in the zombie face-off of all zombie face-offs in the aforementioned theme park, which turns out to be ground zero for every zombie for miles around. Danged good entertainment, this is not a movie for the squeamish and even I had to cover my eyes a few times, even as I was laughing so hard I nearly fell out of my movie seat a couple of times. But, trust me, if you like zombie films that also tickle your funny bone, then Zombieland, with all of its grunting and growling body-crunching zombies, will keep you in stitches.
