Seattle OUT protest's Generation Q Mega Mixer
by James Whitely - SGN Contributing Writer

On October 11, just a few hours after the Seattle solidarity march coinciding with the National Equality March on Washington, local youth and experienced leaders in the community gathered for the Generation Q Mega Mixer at the Sole Repair Shop, a small venue on Capitol Hill.

The mixer was put on by Seattle OUTprotest, the same organization that sponsored and put together the Equality Weekend's Thinking Queerly workshops, the Saturday-night HIV/AIDS vigil, and Sunday's march.

The mixer served as a way to get the younger generation acquainted with the activists largely responsible for the Seattle LGBT Equality weekend, and to get them thinking critically about their role and potential as young activists

Early in the evening, everyone introduced themselves and a few games were played to loosen everyone up. Freedom Socialist Party member and longtime LGBT activist Tamara Turner overwhelmingly won the dance competition.

Youth and leaders then broke up into small groups to discuss topics as diverse as activism, sexuality, and the Referendum 71 campaign.

Some of the seasoned activists present were Sam Bernstein, a member of the International Socialist Organization and Seattle's Queer Ally Coalition, Reverend Ray Neal, Senior Pastor of Metropolitan Community Church Seattle, and Seattle Gay News Editor and longtime activist George Bakan.
