HRC HQ allegedly vandalized by radical Queer group
by James Whitely - SGN Contributing Writer

On October 11 at approximately 4 a.m., the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) headquarters building in Washington D.C. was vandalized with graffiti entailing criticism of HRC's operating methods. Later in the day, after the national march, a group claimed responsibility for the graffiti, which read 'Quit leaving Queers behind.'

The vandalism occurred just after President Barack Obama spoke at HRC's Annual National Fundraising Dinner.

The annual gala, a $250-a-plate dinner, was sponsored largely by major corporations such as Nike, Lockheed Martin, and Bank of America, to name a few. According to the group that took responsibility, Queers Against Assimilation, this was but one of the reasons for their actions, as corporate sponsorship fuels the distaste they have for the HRC.

In a statement released by Queers Against Assimilation, they said, "The HRC is not a democratic or inclusive institution, especially for the people who they claim to represent. Just like society today, the HRC is run by a few wealthy elites who are in bed with corporate sponsors who proliferate militarism, heteronormativity, and capitalist exploitation."

Queers Against Assimilation are, in their own words, "a crew of radical Queer and allied folks armed with pink and black paint and glitter grenades." Pink and black are commonly known as the colors of the Anarcha-Feminism movement. Some radical Queer groups see the two movements as going hand-in-hand, and patriarchy being enforcing of heteronormative ideals.

HRC Deputy Communications Director Trevor Thomas told SGN, "The vandalism on the front of the building was rather minimal, we've filed a report with the D.C. police department and we are hopeful they will catch whoever perpetrated this crime."

The HRC declined to comment on the motivation of this crime.
