THANKS, MCC SEATTLE!

The volunteers and members of POZSeattle would like to thank the Metropolitan Community Church of Seattle for hosting our monthly social on October 14 at the Cuff. They provided that evening, along with a slew of volunteers from their congregation, to help set up the and transform the bar into a bistro/cafe setting, a full-course dinner that included ham, chicken, baked beans, rolls, and various cakes and pies for dessert. Rev. Ray Neal has been a huge supporter of POZSeattle since he arrived in Seattle and became pastor of the Seattle chapter of MCC, and has been looking for the right time and event to have his congregation participate and sponsor an event for POZSeattle. This was it! We had, over the time of the two-hour event, over 65 hungry and satisfied folks come through and partake in the generously prepared dinner. So again, we want to thank Rev. Ray and Mark, Dale, Tom, Bruce, Michelle, Gil, a different Ray and Mark, and all the volunteers from MCC that prepared and set up for this event. We look forward to future collaborations with them.

One last thank-you to James Whitely, writer from the SGN. Your article in the October 9 edition really gave a great boost to the POZSeattle and MCC. We had folks that came up to us that had not heard of the group and are now interested in participating regularly.

TRICKING THE RIGHT ON REF. 71

When I first saw the ad asking people to vote yes on Referendum 71, my immediate reaction was that they made the same mistakes that happened a year ago in California when ads were run to encourage people to vote no on Proposition 8. Like the ads that were created for voting no on Prop. 8, the ones for Ref. 71 don't reach the undecided voters by asking the question, "What's in it for me?"

What the creator of the ads for Ref. 71 should have done is to show a couple in a park with a toddler. The man turns towards the camera and explains that he and his wife are voting yes on Ref. 71 because they want to have a say on the kind of family they have since those who are opposed to Ref. 71 don't even want married couples to use birth control.

Anyone who knows about the right wing knows that conservatives as a rule are against any form of family planning. To these people, sex is only good for perpetuating a man's patriarchal lineage.

To convince people to support their point of view, the right will often resort to talking about issues in future tenses instead of specifics in their actual context. Fortunately, we can turn tables on them and in a tongue in cheek manner tell how those who are against Ref. 71 might want to extend their restrictions on marriage to a restriction on homosexuals owning guns.

If you know the right wing, you know that they tend to be adamantly against any form of gun control even if it would prevent criminals from purchasing guns. By implying that those who are against Ref. 71 would restrict homosexuals from owning guns, it would be one more thing that would sway some of those who are leaning towards the right's point of view to vote yes on Ref. 71.
