Hey steampunks, it's your turn for a great convention

by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid - SGN A&E Writer

Steamcon
October 23-25
SeaTac Marriott

The first thing you need to know to be "in the know" about Steampunk, a new (and growing in popularity) genre among goths and sci-fi fans and gamers as well, is that it has a huge following and that it's a mix of Victorian-era fashion and some industrial revolution gadgets with a bit of science fiction (think Jules Verne, 2,000 Leagues Under The Sea) thrown in for good measure. Mostly, to those of us who consider ourselves steampunks, it's just fun to dress up in the clothes of Victorian England and have tea and crumpets with friends.

I fell in love with this new genre at Norwescon two years ago, and have to admit that even though I always have gone to the largest Northwestern sci-fi con in Washington to mix and mingle with other sci-fi geeks, the blossoming of yet another subculture drew me in. I went to a panel, where folks were wearing stuff right out of Firefly and Steamboy and decided then and there that I'd travel miles to be with these delightful people, and if you have wondered about it, your chance comes this weekend.

The first ever Steamcon, a steampunk convention, is set to kick of on October 23 and go until the 25 at the Marriott in SeaTac (I found it a bit tricky to navigate, and an unhappy customer of the new transit system warned me that the buses are differently routed since the implication of those trains, so check with Metro). From what I saw on the website (www.steamcon.org), it looks to be a hoot.

Included with registration are talks and panels on everything steampunk, a fashion show, perpetual tea time for those of us Anglophiles who love everything about having tea in an authentic British atmosphere, and a hospitality suite to hang out and meet new steampunkers. I'm sure if you don't have the requisite steampunk goggles that are a part of every true steampunk's costume, you can visit the vendor bazaar to get some, be they the standard kind or ones like mine, the more Willy Wonka type.

Also on hand will be the guest of honor, Tim Powers, author of The Anubis Gates (which I admit to having not read, yet), and probably some other fun events or spontaneous partying that isn't listed on the website. Hey, you get goths, steampunks and gamers together, not only will they visit the gaming rooms (that are listed on the website), but someone will throw a party or two and fun will be had. So visit your vintage shop, or your grandmother's closet and put together something Victorian and join us who'll be pretending to be a castmember from Firefly or Deadwood at Steamcon.
