AVER elects new national president

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Staff Writer

American Veterans For Equal Rights (AVER) elected Danny Ingram as the organization's national president on October 18 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. As president, Ingram will lead the largest national veteran service organization dedicated to serving the needs of LGBT vets, as well as advocate for a repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT), the law banning open service of Gay military personnel.

Ingram, a former U.S. Army Sergeant, was among the first to be discharged in 1994 under the DADT law.

"No American soldier should ever die on the battlefield because the medic who could have saved his or her life was kicked out of the military for loving the wrong person," Ingram said in a speech following his installation as AVER president.

John McNeill, a WWII veteran who served in General George S. Patton's Third Army, swore Ingram into office. McNeill, an AVER member, is a Purple Heart recipient, former Catholic Priest, and Prisoner of War captured in the Battle of the Bulge. He is also the author of The Church and the Homosexual.

During the convention, AVER elected retired U.S. Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Julz Carey as vice president. She is the immediate past president of the AVER Puget Sound chapter. Additionally, retired U.S. Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Nick Jackman, who is current chapter president of AVER Puget Sound, was elected secretary and former U.S. Coast Guard member Mark LaFontaine was elected treasurer.

Delegates representing AVER chapters from New York to Seattle were in attendance for the AVER convention that included workshops on post-traumatic stress disorder, VA benefits, and legislation aimed towards ending the DADT policy.

Speakers at the convention included Arabic linguist and Army Lieutenant Dan Choi, who is in the process of being dismissed after appearing on the Rachael Maddow show proclaiming he was Gay. Choi has become the poster-boy for a repeal of the DADT law, as he continues to speak out against the policy that may cost him his military career. At the recent LGBT National Equality March in Washington, D.C., Choi repeated, "I'm telling, I'm telling, I'm telling."

The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Nathaniel Frank whose new book Unfriendly Fire documents the political history of the DADT law.

"It is the duty, the honor, and the right of every American to help defend our nation's liberty," Ingram said. "We are ready for the final battle to end this shameful and wasteful ban, which not only jeopardizes our national security and the safety of our soldiers by removing highly qualified individuals from the war against terror, but undermines the very mission of our armed forces to defend our American freedom, so that patriotic Americans who choose to volunteer may honorably and openly serve their country regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity."

AVER is a non-profit, chapter-based association of active, reserve and veteran service members dedicated to full and equal rights and equitable treatment for all present and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces.
