Equality California petitions Obama

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Staff Writer

Equality California's Executive Director, Geoff Kors, is demanding that President Obama take action against anti-equality ballot measures. The organization has set up a petition to Obama on their website at www.eqca.org/enough.

"President Obama has said he is opposed to discriminatory ballot measures," Kors said, adding, "it's time for him to do something about it."

According to Kors, the President can do something to prevent future ballot measures designed to take away LGBT rights by asking the federal court to rule that Proposition 8 and similar measures violate the 14th Amendment of the United States Constitution.

"Join the more than 17,000 people who are already demanding that President Obama and Attorney General Holder act now," Kors said.

The petition language is as follows: President Obama, I urge you to immediately file a brief in the federal court challenge to Prop 8 and ask the court to rule that it is unconstitutional to allow a majority to take away the rights of a minority.

Petition signers are required to only provide their first name, last name, e-mail address, and zip code. The whole process takes less than a minute to complete.

"If politicians want our support, then they must speak out and act when the rights of any minority are threatened," Kors said. "If we can just get the President to act, we can help to ensure that what happened in Maine and California never happens again."

Kors said that with emotions still raw from Tuesday's General Election results "we need to make sure we turn our anger into action."

The case against Proposition 8 is set in U.S. District Court for an early January hearing.

Founded in 1998, Equality California celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2008, commemorating a decade of building a state of equality in California. In the past 11 years, Equality California has strategically moved California from a state with extremely limited legal protections for LGBT individuals to a sate with some of the most comprehensive civil rights protections in the nation.
