Kiss-in provides visibility for new UW LGBT group

by James Whitely - SGN Contributing Writer

Newly formed University of Washington student group Students Organizing for LGBT Equality (SOLE) staged a kiss-in on November 4 at the University of Washington's Red Square. The event, which was a moderate success, served as a celebration of the early lead for the Approve R-71 Campaign, as well as a way to provide much-needed visibility for the new group.

SOLE offered free Hershey's Kisses candies as well as kisses on the cheek from lipstick-clad SOLE members to any and all passersby.

SOLE was formed only a few weeks ago, as a product of Seattle OUTprotest Weekend. Students Mario Lemata and Emily Juhre were looking for a University of Washington student group with political aims similar to Seattle OUTprotest, the organization that put on the recent weekend of events here in Seattle. Not finding anything, they decided to create their own.

Modeled after Seattle OUTprotest, and with the help of other interested students and students groups such as the University of Washington International Socialist Organization, SOLE seems to be off to a strong start.
