Dina Martina's Xmas show laugh-out-loud holiday mayhem

by Shaun Knittel- SGN Staff Writer

The Dina Martina
Christmas Show
Re-bar
Through
December 30

It's that time of year again, when families decorate the Christmas tree, children write letters to Santa Claus, and Dina Martina shocks the hell out of everybody with her laugh-out-loud, derailed train ride of a show. That's right, Seattle, she's back - The Dina Martina Christmas Show has returned to Re-bar.

In what has become a shockingly absurd but oh-so-funny Seattle tradition, The Dina Martina Christmas Show is a holiday staple. I brought a friend along to see the December 4 show just to watch the look of complete disbelief flash across his face within seconds of Miss Martina making her entrance. This was the second time I had the pleasure of watching the comedic genius, and the second time I left with sore cheeks from laughing all night. Christmas has never looked so bad, but felt so good.

Chances are you've already been to a Dina Martina show. Dina's creator, Grady West, has gained an extremely devoted following since bursting onto the contemporary art scene in 1989. Since then, Dina Martina has sold out performances on both coasts and everywhere in between. There are no words to describe just who or what Dina Martina is to a person who has not yet had the pleasure of viewing the entertainer's show. My advice is this: Don't try to explain it. Just take them along, sit back and enjoy every second as they turn to you and ask, "What is going on?" With a little luck, maybe, just maybe, you will be able to say, "I don't know" through fits of laughter.

For true Dina Martina fans, I am happy to report that all of your favorite Dina moments are in the show. From her trademark unnecessary dance moves and ridiculous costumes to her excruciating singing as she murders one song after another and gives out unwanted gifts (that seem direct from the island of misfits), Dina's got it covered.

Accompanying Dina Martina once again is musical director Chris Jeffries, who brings much-needed normalcy to the show. The contrast between Jeffries' beautiful music and Dina's singing is a perfect fit.

As with all Dina Martina shows, the real moments of blissful laughter come when she banters with the audience. As she mispronounced words and talked about completely nonsensical topics, I found myself hanging on her every word. Off-script doesn't even begin to explain the topics of conversation Dina decides to speak with the audience about. All I know is that you can't wait to hear what's next from the veteran Seattle performer.

This year, Dina Martina has a few surprises in store for the audience. I don't dare give them away in print, but I can tell you this much: there is new fabulous merchandise, Dina plays an instrument, and there's something very different about a piece of her wardrobe.

The Dina Martina Christmas Show plays Friday and Saturday nights at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. until December 30 at Re-bar. Drink specials are available and seating begins one hour prior to show time. Tickets are $20 and are available at Brown Paper Tickets. The show is wildly popular and sells out quickly, so be sure to buy tickets in advance. For more information about Dina Martina, visit the entertainer's official website at www.dinamartina.com.

I will never look at Christmas the same again, thanks to Dina Martina - as a lover of good comedy and drag performances, I mean that as the highest form of flattery. There may be a lot to see and do throughout Seattle this holiday season, but The Dina Martina Christmas Show had better be at the top of your Christmas list. More naughty than nice, you don't want to miss out on an evening of laughter, shock, and holiday cheer.
