SGN PICKS - Best live performances of the year, 2009

by Albert Rodriguez, Jessica Price and Shaun Knittel - SGN Writers

Albert Rodriguez's picks
Whether it's 90 degrees and I'm enjoying a cool breeze under a tree at Woodland Park Zoo or it's a freezing 30 degrees and I'm waiting for the doors to open at the Moore Theatre to be the first inside, the best place to find me is at a concert. There were a lot of great shows this year, yet there were also some disappointments (Yann Tiersen at Neumos comes to mind vividly). From the dozens of concerts I attended in 2009, here are the 10 that stood out from the pack. Happy holidays to all of you!

1) Green Day @ Key Arena, July 3
2) Lady GaGa @ The Showbox Market, March 16
3) Deadmau5 @ The Showbox Market, October 3
4) The Dead Weather @ Paramount Theatre, August 20
5) Franz Ferdinand @ Memorial Stadium (Bumbershoot), September 7
6) Al Green @ Tulalip Amphitheatre, August 27
7) Jason Mraz and friends @ The Crocodile, September 6
8) Coldplay w/ Snow Patrol @ GM Place (Vancouver BC), June 21
9) Tori Amos @ WaMu Theater, July 10
10) Blitzen Trapper @ Mural Amphitheatre, August 7

Jessica Price's picks
This wasn't exactly a milestone year for live music, but it was full of surprises. Beyoncé and Pink dangling from the ceiling? My Bloody Valentine, Depeche Mode, and Morrissey on the tour circuit again? At least if nothing groundbreakingly new happened, artists with a few records under their belt or longstanding careers really gave performances to remember. Here are my picks for most memorable shows of 2009.

1) Beyoncé @ Key Arena, April 1
2) My Bloody Valentine @ WaMu Theater, April 27
3) Bat For Lashes @ Neumos, August 26
4) Regina Spektor @ Paramount Theatre, November 3
5) The Horrors @ Neumos, October 6
6) Manic Street Preachers @ Neumos, September 21
7) Gossip @ The Showbox Market, October 23
8) Morrissey @ Paramount Theatre, November 29
9) Depeche Mode @ Key Arena, August 10
10) Neko Case @ Paramount Theatre, June 4

Shaun Knittel's picks
If you're like me, then music is always playing. Whether it be on the radio at home, the iPod at the gym, or iTunes at work, it's always on. So it should come as no surprise that I jump at the chance to see any of my favorite bands when they come to town. There is no better place to catch a live act than Seattle. This is a music town, and when the tour bus arrives, everyone knows you better bring it. This year, I was fortunate enough to review shows that ranged from '80s pop legends to a gifted pianist backed by a symphony, and had a blast every step of the way. Below are 10 picks for the year's best live concerts.

1) Pet Shop Boys @ Moore Theatre, September 20
2) The Sounds @ The Showbox Market, October 27
3) Ben Folds @ Paramount Theatre, May 13
4) Flight of the Conchords @ Paramount Theatre, May 11
5) Mika @ Moore Theatre, October 26
6) Pixies @ Paramount Theatre, November 13
7) Ben Folds with Seattle Symphony @ Benaroya Hall, October 20
8) David Cook @ The Showbox SoDo, August 24
9) Ani DiFranco @ Moore Theatre, October 24
10) Moby @ The Showbox SoDo, October 18
