Dyketown: Sneaking into Women's Chorus rehearsal & rib

by Mercy Moosemuzzle - SGN Contributing Writer

Seattle Women's Chorus
Mercy snuck in and sat at the back of the final rehearsal of the upcoming Seattle Women's Chorus concert with a big smile on her face. Her friend, Melody Barrister, had said, "I think our holiday concert again delivers by providing something for everyone. As usual, it's not your typical Christmas concert. Some of the highlights will be a gorgeous 'Mozart Laudate Dominum,' a fun 'Rosa Sat' about Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, and Obama, and an irreverent and fun rewrite of the traditional holiday musical fare in 'Feminist Holiday Songbook.' Also, 'Carol from an Irish Cabin' is simple, plaintive, and draws one in like warm fire on a very cold, clear winter night." Ms. Moosemuzzle had to agree.

Alvin and the Chipmunks are among Mercy's favorite Christmas performers. She is delighted that SWC has come up with three wisecracking Lesbian chipmunks. Mercy also enjoyed Dar Williams' "The Christians and the Pagans," done SWC style, and the rock and roll Christmas songs.

Mercy was impressed with the wise level of detail Dennis Coleman used in his direction of the rehearsal. He knows exactly how the singers need to hold their mouths for the desired effect. Coleman has an incredible ear for where the errors are and the right chord of humor in correcting them. Mercy sees why her friends in the chorus love Dennis. Assistant Director Rhonda Juliano raised a chuckle when she said, "That portion of the music isn't supposed to sound like, 'Help Me Rhonda.'"

Making Spirits Bright is going to be the last holiday concert for SWC. A focus group came to the conclusion that there are too many holiday concerts. Mercy has to agree. The chorus will do February and October concerts, after this. First, they will join with the Men's Chorus for their 30th anniversary concert in June.

Cuteness' Rib
Cuteness misjudged a step on her porch, as she was reading her mail, fell and cracked her rib against the railing. It has been painful for her. Mercy and Equality have been helping with things Cuteness shouldn't do, such as walking their dog, Diamond. Fortunately, Cuteness knows how to respect her limits. Unfortunately, Diamond does not.

Mercy and Cuteness had to cancel seeing the Kinsey Sicks because of the accident. They had planned a trip to Portland to see their friend Annie Meyer's annual art show. Mercy made it a day trip, since that was how long she could trust Equality's attention span!

Annie Meyer Art Show
When Mercy walked into Annie's Studio 2507, she was struck with how much bigger and bluer the artist's minimalist landscape paintings are becoming. Meyer's work has been more characteristically red. Those paintings have been very popular. Annie's landscapes have a nice level of abstraction. Her other favorite subject is nudes, which always make Mercy smile.

A new series Meyer created are some white pieces on tile featuring people walking dogs that bear a distinct resemblance to her poodle, Sasha. Mercy brought one back to Cuteness, because it reminded her of them walking Diamond. See for yourself at www.anniemeyerartwork.com.

Coming Up
Mercy is really looking forward to seeing the Rainbow City Band concert on December 20. She particularly likes to see the way her friend Lucidity Piccolo lights up when she is surrounded by her community of fellow Gay and Lesbian musicians (www.rainbowcityband.com).

She is also looking forward to Meet Me in St. Louis at Village Theatre (www.villagetheatre.org).

This New Year's Eve, Angela at the Laughing Ladies Cafe in Shoreline is hosting a fundraiser for Pinky's Passion, which donates to organizations fighting Parkinson's disease. The band, Third Train Running, will be there to entertain you. Third Train Running is an acoustic band that plays a mix of blues, country and folk. They are known for Lindsey Erickson's dynamite vocals, which range from sultry to gritty to so sweet you'll think the angels are singing along. Then, for all of you who love to dance, we're going to "roll back the carpets," put on some dance music, and dance the night away.

Please join Angela, Pinky and friends for a fun night as we ring in a cure for the New Year. The Laughing Ladies Cafe is located at 17551 15th Ave. NE, Shoreline. Tickets are $20 and are available at Laughing Ladies (www.laughingladiescafe.com) or Pinky's Passion (www.pinkyspassion.org). Ticket price includes appetizers, champagne at midnight, and party favors.

Mercy is hoping she, Cuteness and Equality can go, especially since it is an all-ages event, and the music would give them a chance to practice their two-step. Since Equality is 13, she will have to decide at the last minute.
