Big Love takes a big Gay twist

by James Whitely - SGN Contributing Writer

The HBO polygamy drama Big Love will be beginning its fourth season on January 10. Season four will be adding a new twist to the show - a Gay twist.

The creators of the show about a fictional fundamentalist Mormon polygamous family living in Sandy, Utah, announced that the same-sex story angle will be a relationship between two male characters in a fictional breakaway sect at the center of the series.

The first episode of the new season will center on the character Alby, who is the son of the leader of a fictional polygamist group. Alby will have a "close encounter" with a male trustee.

"There's a provocative nature to what we're doing," co-creator Mark Olsen told Entertainment Weekly magazine.

The new Gay storyline is likely to stir up controversy in Mormon circles, where homosexual relations are prohibited.

"It's more than just the Mormon culture. We're highlighting certain aspects of the church's relationship with its Gay members that I think, as the story unfolds, is going to cause no small amount of controversy," said Olsen.

The Mormon Church, which is officially known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, banned polygamy in 1890. However, Mormon critics of the show claim that Big Love often blurs the lines between fiction and the real Mormon Church.

Joel Campbell, a columnist with the unofficial church website MormonTimes.com, said, "Once again, it sounds like Olsen and company are ready to blur the lines between a fictional fundamentalist group and what is practiced in the LDS Church. Bottom line: Producers are using their artistic license as a screen for misinformation and bigotry."

Big Love stars Bill Paxton as Bill Henrickson, and Chloë Sevigny, Ginnifer Goodwin and Jeanne Tripplehorn co-star as his three wives. The show, which first aired in 2006, has been nominated for five Emmy Awards and seven Golden Globe Awards.
