Local students 'pledge' to be an ally to LGBT youth
Local students 'pledge' to be an ally to LGBT youth
GLSEN Puget Sound sponsors inaugural Ally Week

Dozens of Gay-Straight Alliances and diversity clubs participated in the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network Puget Sound's Ally Week, a week-long action that seeks to empower straight students, faculty and administration to be allies in making anti-Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) name-calling, bullying and harassment unacceptable in K-12 schools. Nationally, more than 300 student clubs had registered their participation.

GLSEN's 2003 National School Climate Survey found that more than 4 out 5 LGBT students routinely experience verbal, sexual and physical harassment at school. "Allies have always been an integral part of the safer schools movement," said GLSEN National Founder and Executive Director Kevin Jennings. "As this project seeks to encourage straight allies to make a visible stand, it also celebrates their key role in ensuring safer schools for all students."

In addition to curriculum ideas and support from its office in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood, the group sponsored a bowling event for youth, titled "Ally at the Alley," to cap off a week of student-led efforts. The two hour event included shoe rental, soda and as many bowling games as the youth could play.

"The students really enjoy opportunities to socialize with other GSA's," said GSA Advisor Joe Bento, M. Ed. "GLSEN Puget Sound has been doing a wonderful job of supporting the efforts of these courageous youth and encouraging GSA collaboration."

Bento, a high school teacher, was the co-founder of GLSEN Puget Sound's Washington State GSA Network. The statewide program includes nearly 150 GSA's and student groups from around the state. "The network sponsors events, such as the 3rd Annual GSA Leadership Summit on October 14th, the GSA Recognition Banquet in the spring and various activities throughout the year."
