OUTVENTURES: Get 'out' there - Outdoor organization for the GLBT community thrives
OUTVENTURES: Get 'out' there - Outdoor organization for the GLBT community thrives
With the great summer weather that Seattle's experiencing this year Mother Nature is calling to our inner instinct to "get out there" and experience fun and adventure beyond the realms of our city limits. OutVentures is definitely the way to go.

OutVentures is an outdoor non-profit organization for the GLBT community here in Seattle founded in 1993 and serving the Pacific Northwest. We are a member-lead organization focusing on the outdoors, we engage in all types of outdoor activities ranging in difficulty from easy to extreme. We welcome anyone that wishes to join and hope they will lead an adventure or two. We also have monthly potlucks during the summer as well as occasional classes and social events.

The one principle underlying all OutVentures activities is volunteerism. The success of the club depends entirely on the willingness of members to lead trips and organize activities. The pleasure and satisfaction we derive from OutVentures will always be equal to the energy members are willing to contribute. No one person or committee plans activities. Trips only happen when individual members submit their listing to the web site http://outventures.org/

Joining OutVentures is easy. Dues are $20 for an Individual membership, or $30 for a Couple living at the same address. Memberships last for one year. Please visit the website and checkout the photos of our various trips.

The following is an example of a Trip Report from July 05 lead by Parker Travis:

Six of us, Karla, Elaine, Rex, Don, Paul and I, set out on a beautiful Sunday morning for a date with destiny. Could we tame this fearsome trail or would we be forced to stop short of our goal?

The trail to Minotaur Lake starts climbing early and keeps climbing. In place of the usual switchbacks was a path that, as advertised, went straight up the side of a ridge. It sounds hard, but we started with a steady pace and kept it (thanks to Karla's Swahili) and we were at the lake in an hour and fifteen minutes.

The lake and its setting were incredibly gorgeous. The lake has a picturesque island to greet you as the trail joins it and then the lake opens into a beautiful cirque of crystal clear cobalt blue water. We stopped for a snack and then decided to soldier on and tackle the mountain itself. Five of us scrambled up finding a faint tread in the upper reaches of talus. Unfortunately for you, dear reader, I was the one who decided that climbing a mountain wasn't on his to-do list. I hear that there were some spectacular views and that Elaine walked far enough down the razor edge ridge to catch a glimpse of Glacier Peak. I decided to head in the other direction and rounded a shoulder in hopes of seeing Mt. Stuart. I was in luck, but not so much luck that I got a picture.

Both vantage points offered views of Thesus Lake. It appeared that there was a narrow saddle separating the two lakes that were about the same elevation. Imagine our surprise when we walked over to the saddle later and found that the lake was 700 ft lower than Minotaur Lake.

Therefore, we returned to the shores of Minotaur Lake, ate lunch and then five of us took off our boots and walked around in the cold water for a while. Man! That was refreshing.

Going back to the car turned out to be the hard part. The steep trail was easy enough to climb up, but became a nuisance on the way down as we struggled to find footholds on the steep grade.

We all made it back to the car, enjoyed some cool beverages and chips (thanks, Rex) by a different creek and headed back to Seattle.

I've seen a lot of lakes in my three seasons of hiking with OV. This lake may have been the most beautiful. Thanks, Shane, for arranging this hike.
