A Dyke About Town: New Year's Eve and a White Christmas

by Mercy Moosemuzzle - SGN Contributing Writer

New Year's Eve at Laughing Lady Cafe
Mercy and Cuteness had a blast ringing in the New Year at Laughing Lady Cafe in Shoreline. The evening was a fundraiser for Pinky's Passion and was organized by Pat Erickson, whose diagnosis with Parkinson's has motivated her to create various opportunities to bring in money for a cure. Cuteness liked finding out that Pat has also pulled together vintage fashion shows for the same purpose.

Mercy was impressed by Pat's smile, indomitable dancing, and the poem she read about her experience with the disease (particularly because Mercy has a similar disease).

After Pat's talk, the band Third Train Running took the stage, playing blues, rock and country. Mercy and Cuteness were knocked out by Lindsey Erickson's vocals. Later, it occurred to Mercy that Lindsay might have been Pat's daughter. Her back up musicians were upbeat. High points included The Other Woman, There's A Train,Jolene, The House of the Rising Sun, and Wade in the Water. Cuteness was particularly pleased that the group played that last song, because she had been about to request it. Mercy liked how much Erickson's voice resembled Janis Joplin's. Cuteness would have liked the group to have had a keyboard.

The band ended their performance and one of their members DJ'd for the rest of the night. The music was deliciously danceable. Mercy was feeling protective of Cuteness' rib, but hoped it was safe to dance close to a real slow song like Black Velvet. Cuteness couldn't resist twisting a bit to She Loves You, which she paid for for a couple of days afterward.

The spread of food was generous and tasty. Mercy and Cuteness liked the diversity of customers Angela Rinaldo's place is drawing, and the creativity she fosters on her stage.

White Christmas
Mercy can't resist saying a few words about White Christmas, even though it has been covered quite a bit. She and Cuteness saw it just as it was ending, and loved every chestnut in the old buddy movie turned into a play. The Irving Berlin lyrics and music held up well. All the dancing was delightful, with Greg McCormick Allen particularly nailing the 50's swing style. Carol Swarbrick knocked the ball out of the stadium with Let Me Sing and I'll Be Happy. Lauren Carlos did a reprise of that song, imitating Ms. Swarbrick, that also delighted.
