Met broadcasts with Cuteness and Assonance

by Mercy Moosemuzzle - SGN Contributing Writer

Met broadcast of Carmen
Mercy and Cuteness saw the encore of the Met's Carmen and were impressed with the singing. Elina Garanca, in the title role, was excellent. Cuteness noted that Garanca's interpretation of the role was colder than some other Carmens. Roberto Alagna's Don Jose was well-sung and convincing. Teddy Tahu Rhodes, who had only learned that morning that he was going to play Escamillo, did incredibly well. Mercy's sources say the man who was scheduled to play the role called in sick after getting bad reviews.

Cuteness found the camerawork choppy and hard to follow. She wished they had taken a wider view of the choreography than just focusing on Carmen so she could have seen the other dancers. She noticed some goofs that were hard to miss under the close ups, such as Don Jose not quite getting Carmen into the handcuffs.

Met broadcast of Simon Boccanegra
Mercy and the gang have been bursting with joy after seeing the Met Broadcast of Simon Boccanegra. The high point of the production was Placido Domingo's work in the title role. His singing in the baritone role was exquisite, even though he is a tenor. His acting was great. The fact that he was an inspiration to his castmates was palpable. Cuteness pointed out that when the camera peeked at the singers backstage, she was impressed that Domingo was supporting the others, rather than focusing on his curtain call.

Mercy stage-whispered to Justice that the soprano who played Boccanegra's daughter is an out Lesbian. He quipped, "She is now." Her singing and acting were right on. Loyalty pointed out that she is a bit meatier than some singers, which he liked.

James Morris, who has been singing as long as Domingo, also exuded justifiable confidence. Marcello Giordano's singing was out of this world. Justice said, "Unfortunately, he can't act. His version of love looks like a stomachache. But with that voice, who cares?"

At intermission, Cuteness was telling Assonance, who is also a birder, that she missed her on their Nicaragua trip. Cuteness reminded Mercy, who isn't a birder, that she had committed herself to taking an interest in birding, but doesn't really pay attention. Assonance said, "Well, it's a good thing she enjoys your daughter, Equality."

That led Mercy to imitate her favorite line from the 13-year-old on their trip: "I don't drink bathroom water." Mercy does have one friend who used to be a urology nurse who eschews filling her water bottle in the bathroom - presumably because she knows too much.

Deliberation put in that he doesn't even use the covers for his toothbrush. Mercy said, "Oh, those are for cleanliness? I thought they were decorative."

Met Auditions
Assonance and Mercy went to the local auditions for the Met. It was heartwarming to see young singers getting their start in contrast with the sublimely mature ones they had seen the day before.

Rachel Willis-Sorenson, the first performer, earned applause and "bravos" for her first number, "Come scoglio." Mercy thought they should be "bravas," so she joined the response to her second song, "Einsam in truben Tagen," that way.

Maya Lahyani, who sang "Sgombra e' la sacra selva" before intermission, also whirled the audience away. They cheered when the judges requested "Seguidilla," which she sang and moved through brilliantly. The two women wound up tying, and both getting the prize of $5,000 and moving on to the national competition.

Assonance's favorite, Michael Anthony McGee, won third. She appreciated that he chose difficult music such as "O du mein holder Abendstern," and rose to it beautifully.

Assonance told Mercy she had talked to an Italian language coach who told her a case could made for not making the audience's bravos agree with the gender of the performer, if it is being used as an adverb, such as "well done." Mercy told her she had asked a Sicilian friend and he had said it should agree.

Assonance also finds it snotty of audience members to emphasize the ending of the bravo to make the point that they are doing it right. Mercy might have been guilty of that, and is considering toning them down.

Coming up:
Mercy and Cuteness are looking forward to seeing Alicia Healey, Rebecca Cohen, Eileen Cuba, and Jean Mann at Laughing Ladies Café on February 20. Alicia Healey has a beautiful voice, fun lyrics and mastery of her guitar. The colorful, clever, engaging entertainer whose passion for life is infectious, Rebecca Cohen, is on the bill, too. Eileen Cuba's fearlessly distilled lyrics and exhilarating guitar will also be there. The vocal prowess and eclectic playing style of Jean Mann will fill out the evening.
