Uganda pastor shows Gay porn in church

by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

A well-connected Uganda pastor showed Gay porn videos to his congregation in an attempt to revive support for Uganda's infamous 'kill the Gays' legislation.

BBC News reports that Pastor Martin Ssempa, a former protégé of Saddleback Church founder Rick Warren, showed hardcore Gay sex tapes to a congregation of about 300 people, including children.

Ssempa is reported to have said, 'We are in the process of legislation and we have to educate ourselves about what homosexuals do.'

Noma Pakade, of the African Gay rights group Behind the Mask, labeled Ssempa's action 'twisted' and accused him of inciting anti-Gay violence.

"Showing pornography in church in the presence of minors is twisted homophobic propaganda, where homosexuality is equated to pedophilia and pornography," she told BBC.

"It is not surprising, but rather disappointing, that in Africa in the 21st century, yet again discrimination and prejudice is legitimized through religion," she continued.

The Anti-Homosexual Bill introduced in Uganda's parliament last fall stipulates the death penalty for Gay "repeat offenders" and for HIV-positive people who have sex. It also calls for prison terms for those who fail to turn in Gay friends, relatives, or neighbors to authorities.

Uganda's president has backed off his previous support for the legislation under intense international pressure.

President Obama has condemned the bill as "odious" and US officials have warned the Ugandan government not to enact it. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has expressed similar sentiments, and other countries have threatened to cut off aid to Uganda if it becomes law.

Ssempa is influential in Ugandan political circles. He is reportedly close to the bill's author, Ugandan government minister David Bahati.

He was also closely associated with Rick Warren, although their relationship has been strained after Warren disassociated himself from the anti-Gay bill last November.

In 2005, Warren featured Ssempa as the keynote speaker at his global AIDS initiative kickoff.

As late as January 2009, Warren's wife Kay was saying publicly "You are my brother, Martin, and I love you&."

In November 2009, however, under intense pressure even from other conservative evangelicals, Warren stated, "Martin Ssempa does not represent me, my wife Kay, Saddleback Church, nor the Global PEACE Plan strategy."

David Bahati and Yoweri Museveni are reported to be members of The Family - also know as The Fellowship or The C Street Group - a secretive evangelical organization based in the Washington, DC.
