Troublemaker's Mother an ancient story of maternal love

by James Whitely - SGN Staff Writer

Troublemaker's Mother
February 26-28
Nordic Heritage Museum

Nick DiMartino, the creator and host of the Seattle Gay and Lesbian Book Club at the Dunshee House, has taken a short break from his duties at the book club for a personal project: He's written a play.

Troublemaker's Mother, a musical adaptation from the Kalevala, isn't necessarily a Gay play, but like most folklore from around the world, it is rich storytelling and well worth seeing if you're a fan of theater.

"There's not a Gay character in the lot, but I like to think that there are lots of Gay undertones and a Gay sensibility, not to mention the fact that the primary relationship is between the hero and his mother," said DiMartino.

Although DiMartino isn't the least bit Finnish by blood, he is wholly intrigued by the Kalevala, a book of poems from Finnish and Karelian folklore, which was compiled into a single epic poem form by Elias Lönnrot in the 19th century. It is also known as the national epic of Finland.

"The tales that comprise the national epic of Finland have ancient roots that go right to the heart of storytelling," said DiMartino.

DiMartino is happy to present his musical adaptation to you. There are only four scheduled performances from February 26 - 28. The show is running at the Nordic Heritage Museum (2014 NW 67th St.) Tickets are $20, discounts are available for students and seniors. Visit www.finnsnw.com/ffsc or call (206) 363-0225 to purchase tickets.

"Hopefully I've retained the essence of this powerful, ancient story with its universal theme: the mountain-moving love of motherhood, more powerful than death itself," said DiMartino.
