A Dyke About Town: Winterblues and The Last Station

by Mercy Moosemuzzle - SGN Contributing Writer

Winterblues
Mercy and Cuteness loved Winterblues at Laughing Ladies Café. Alicia Healey hosted the evening, singing with her wonderful voice and introducing the other singer/songwriters she had invited. Mercy particularly liked Healey's new song, 'You're Mine,' and other songs she had heard Healey play, such as 'Another Round.' 'Cheese,' a song about breaking up, knocked Mercy and Cuteness out with its line, 'By the end of tonight, you'll beg to get out.'

Mercy found the words of Healey's song 'Hallelujah' running through her mind: 'Hallelujah, that's what you said. / You're in my heart and in my head. / And when it's good, you're in my bed. / Halle, halle, hallelujah&. / I'm too old to search around, / If I haven't found it yet, it can't be found.'

Rebecca Cohen had the room singing along to her song 'At the 24-Hour Church of Elvis.' Mercy also enjoyed her 'Don't Call My Name' and 'Angels in Your Eyes.' The lyrics of 'You Hung the Moon' were compelling: 'My girlfriends say my face ain't right, / I can't eat, I can't sleep at night. / They say I got to stop waiting for you to change your ways. / They could be right as rain. / But they never saw the blaze, / Never heard the thunder, / Never saw the crackling air / The night you hung the moon.'

Eileen Cuba's 'The Deep End' and 'It's Not Mine' were moving. Mercy was impressed that Eileen came back from the break with a song she had just finished, 'Curious.'

The extended metaphor of Cuba's 'New Math' impressed Mercy: 'There's a subtraction problem I can't solve. / Every time there's less of you. / I recheck my figures / And try to figure out how to get the rest of you. / No happy ending and knowing smiles / Thirty years from now. / A week or two is all I got.'

Jean Mann's 'Mosaic' also had a pleasing metaphoric quality. 'The Midnight Sun' was powerful. 'Pink' ended the evening on a nice light note.

The Last Station
Mercy and Cuteness had been looking forward to The Last Station because they are huge Helen Mirren fans. They weren't disappointed in her performance. Everything about her face and her body expressed the range of emotions Sofya Tolstoya experienced in dealing with confrontations with her power. Mercy agreed with Cuteness that Christopher Plummer's acting was his best in years. Paul Giamatti was also convincing.

Mercy liked the chemistry between James McAvoy and Kerry Condon. She also felt director Michael Hoffman's direction got all the details right. His dialogue was sharp.
