Sylvia and Tor serve cocktails and cabaret

by James Whitely - SGN Staff Writer

Cocktails with Sylvia and Tor
The Orient Express
Restaurant and Lounge
Thursdays through
March 25

The scene is a dimly lit train car just slightly into SoDo. Enter two well-dressed performers: Sylvia O'Stayformore and Tor Middlewood. Cocktails with Sylvia and Tor is an intimate, refreshing and nostalgic two-hour evening of wonderful cabaret that's perfect for date night.

A musical journey ensues at the Orient Express Restaurant and Lounge (2963 4th Ave. S.) with the wonderful voice of Sylvia O'Stayformore and Middlewood on guitar and piano. Sylvia's connection with the audience is natural, intrinsic, and immediate.

The two lead you on an 18-song musical journey as Sylvia sings a large selection of Burt Bacharach, jazz, burlesque, vaudeville, and other cabaret hits, including Burt Bacharach's "I'll Never Fall in Love Again," "I Say a Little Prayer," "Do You Know the Way to San Jose," "The Last One to Be Loved," Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer's "One for My Baby," and many more, including a few original songs by Middlewood.

Sylvia and Tor sneak in a kazoo or two. The sounds are done by Sylvia's tech DJ LuYing, aka Miss Moist Towelette, and the sound and ambiance is perfect. The three create a unique and perfect evening as Sylvia sings directly to you regardless of where you're sitting in the train car.

Cocktails with Sylvia and Tor is easily one of the most pleasant evenings of entertainment I've seen in quite a while. The no-cover show runs every Thursday night through March 25 from 8-10 p.m. The Orient Express is unmistakable from the roadside on Fourth Ave. So come relax, have dinner, and enjoy a wonderful show.
