SAM stays up late for stylish Remix

by James Whitely - SGN Staff Writer

Remix February 26 Seattle Art Museum

On February 26, The Seattle Art Museum (SAM) kept its doors open until midnight to host the biggest party in Seattle: Remix. All night, Remix was exploding with creativity and style, with visual art at the center.

Remix is unique, not only because of SAM's collection but because of the nature of the museum and the city of people that frequent it, explained Greg Sandoval, manager of adult public programs at SAM.

According to Sandoval, Remix "gives people a different kind of museum experience."

Remix featured live kinetic sculpture installations, modern dance, multiple DJs including Freddy King of Pants (from Bearracuda), accordionist Philip Kobernik of band the Hey Marseilles, Teatro ZinZanni juggler Bernard Hazens, an interactive sculpture design competition, a bearded lady competition, figure drawing, free masquerade face painting, and readings by various talented poets.

"We wanted to make it extremely robust and have the SAM just exploding with activity," Sandoval told SGN. "Sort of like an indoor block party."

Quite possibly the most unique experiences the night offered were the "My Favorite Things" tours, which were personal tours led by local and internationally known artists and art critics, like Mark Doty, who had just finished a poetry reading for Seattle Arts and Lectures, Adrianna Grant, and Regina Hackett.

Remix brought out over 1,500 people, many of who couldn't even get through the doors of the at-capacity party.

"Remix is a program that we've been working on for the last couple of years," Sandoval told SGN. The event started out as a smaller-scale monthly after-hours party. Now quarterly, Remix has undergone a quick evolution into one of Seattle's most premier places to be.

The next Remix is scheduled for Friday June 4, during the "Kurt" and the "love fear pleasure lust pain glamour death - Andy Warhol" exhibitions.

"The works on view in Kurt range from straightforward portraiture to pieces that show a more subtle assimilation of Cobain's ethos and idealism in a broad range of media," says Michael Darling, The Jon & Mary Shirley curator of Modern & Contemporary Art.

The Warhol exhibit, "love fear pleasure lust pain glamour death includes works that compel us to consider the artist's fascination with all things ephemeral, from beauty and youth to celebrity status," says Marisa Sánchez, assistant curator of Modern and Contemporary Art.

You don't have to be a member of SAM to get into Remix, but membership has its privileges at the party. SAM members receive priority access (an enormously important perk, as many were left standing out in the cold), as well as a members-only lounge with a complimentary drink. Remix is an 18+ event.
