A Dyke About Town: Lisa Koch, Dying City, and Gay Easter Bunnies |

Demonstrate the Place
of My Abode
Mercy and Cuteness were very moved by Lisa Koch's work in the Solo Performance Festival. The play deals with Lisa's father, Frank, and his sudden death. The title, Demonstrate the Place of My Abode, is a translation of the song, 'Show Me the Way to Go Home,' which had been a favorite of his.
Koch used the folksongs her father loved and also his ever-present jokes to weave the evening together. That combination of sadness and humor was touching and true to life. Mercy could see where Koch got her sense of humor. Cuteness thought it must be satisfying for the singer to be able to work with her grief to such good effect.
The play also involved Lisa's father using Oregon's "Death with Dignity" law. That process turned out to have unpredictable complications, since Frank lived in conservative Southern Oregon.
Dying City
Mercy and Cuteness found Christopher Shinn's play Dying City at Seattle Public Theater gripping. It is a two-actor, three-character play, with Chris Maslen playing a pair of twins. Mercy liked the tight shifts between the two. Cuteness was impressed with a costume change at the end.
Shana Bestock played the widow of one of the brothers with heartbreaking accuracy. As the play works its way out, her grief turns out to have angles that hadn't been anticipated.
Gay Easter Bunnies
Mercy likes the fact that the New York Times Magazine features a front cover illustration of two bunnies with the headline "They Gay?" It accompanies an intriguing article by Jon Mooallem, "The Love That Dare Not Squawk its Name." The piece deals with the fact that a large percentage of animals turn out to be Gay. She particularly enjoyed the description of Lesbian albatrosses courting each other. If the Easter Bunny is Gay, that explains why he is capable of such detailed decoration.
Free Legal Clinic
Cuteness passed this announcement along: QLaw Foundation Free LGBT Legal Clinic. It is open the third Thursday of each month from 7-9 p.m., by appointment only. To make an appointment, please call 206-235-7235. Staff is available to schedule appointments every Tuesday from noon to 3 p.m. At the clinic, an attorney will meet with you for 30 minutes and provide you with individualized legal advice and information. The clinic is open to everyone regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
Samarabalouf
Mercy and Cuteness are looking forward to seeing the band Samarabalouf on Saturday, April 17, at UW World Music and Theater.
With a nod to the late, great Django Reinhardt, this fiery gypsy jazz trio from Amiens, France delivers a concert full of musical pyrotechnics. Their lightning licks, wide range of music styles, and abundant good humor make for a thoroughly captivating evening. It's no wonder they are earning critics' praise and standing ovations everywhere they play.
