Elliott Bay Book Company holds grand opening
by James Whitely - SGN Staff Writer

The Elliott Bay Book Company (1521 10th Ave.) celebrated it grand opening at its new Capitol Hill location on April 15. Local businesses shut down 10th Avenue between E. Pike and E. Pine Streets block party-style, as they came out in droves to welcome the bookstore - formerly of Pioneer Square since June 29, 1973 - to its new neighborhood.

The grand opening, sponsored by the Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce, featured both a live local band, Let's Get Lost, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

"The past two years have been a difficult, painful period of exploring and evaluating possibilities in an attempt to determine what would be best - and necessary - to ensure the long-term health and vitality of the store," said Peter Aaron, owner of Elliott Bay.

The new location is nestled right in between Basic Plumbing and the OddFellows building. The building, built in 1918, was the original Ford truck service center for Seattle. The store is now a bit larger and features high wood ceilings and skylights.

"It was hard to come to the realization that we weren't going to survive in Pioneer Square," said Tracey Taylor, general manager of Elliott Bay.

Elliott Bay has always been known by Seattleites as the big local bookstore with creaky floors, high ceilings, and old brick walls, but the staff of Elliott Bay assures its book-loving public that the new space will have its own "distinct charms."

Even at the grand opening, Taylor is already adjusting to the new space with the help of familiar faces. "We see a lot of people that live up here and work in Pioneer Square, so we've kept a lot of our regulars," Taylor told SGN.

The Elliott Bay Café will be re-opening in the new location in early May. For more information on Elliott Bay Book Company, check out www.elliottbaybook.com.
