Seattle Gay News heads to eco-friendly 2010 Kokua Festival

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN A&E Writer

How can we resist a festival one block from Waikiki Beach with a lineup featuring Jack Johnson, Ziggy Marley, Taj Mahal and Jake Shimabukuro? We can't, which is why we're bringing you exclusive coverage of the 2010 Kokua Festival from the island of Oahu.

All proceeds from the Kokua Festival are donated to environmental educational projects in Hawaii schools and communities, besides funding recycling efforts, farm-to-school programs, and promoting a plastic-free Hawaii campaign. Founded by Johnson, pro surfer-turned-Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, and his wife Kim in 2003, the Kokua Hawaii Foundation is a nonprofit organization aimed at keeping our planet cleaner by raising its awareness through community interaction.

The two-day music festival takes place at the world-famous Waikiki Shell, an outdoor amphitheatre in the heart of Honolulu's tourist area. Tickets for the April 23 and 24 event are completely sold-out, and some weren't even up for sale - island residents are offered the opportunity to volunteer for clean-up projects prior to the big concert weekend in exchange for free tickets.

Johnson - when not ripping off his shirt and riding the waves - is busy penning catchy pop songs like "Sitting, Waiting, Wishing," "Better Together," "Times Like These," "Banana Pancakes," and "Upside Down," which appeared on the Curious George film soundtrack. Marley is a five-time Grammy winner and member of the legendary reggae family started by his father, the iconic Bob Marley. Taj Mahal is an international star on the jazz club circuit, while Oahu-based ukulele extraordinaire Shimabukuro, who landed on our "Hottest Guys in Music" list last summer, is an up-and-coming artist who recently shared the stage with Bette Midler in a performance for the Queen of England. Local newbie Anuhea is also on the event lineup.

Besides the incredible music, the Kokua Festival allows non-profit organizations and eco-friendly businesses to further educate the general public with booths at the venue that will distribute informative materials and sell everything from reusable tote bags to organic cotton clothing.

Visit SGN's Facebook page and our blog at www.seattlegayblog.blogspot.com for festival updates this weekend. A review of the two-day concert will appear in next week's issue, as well - and if Jack Johnson should happen to flex those surfer abs on stage, we'll have a camera at the ready.
