Three Dollar Bill Cinema announces Trans film fest

Translations: The Seattle Transgender Film Festival 2010
May 13-16
Various Seattle Venues

The Trans community is arguably the most misunderstood community in the Queer world. From dealing with language unequipped to handle anything outside the fictitious male/female binary to simple things like getting a driver's license or using the bathroom, our Trans siblings are on a different journey than everybody else.

Three Dollar Bill Cinema has been making strides to illuminate the Trans experience for five years through Translations: The Seattle Transgender Film Festival. Translations 2010 returns for its 5th annual run over four days, May 13-16. This year's films are an eclectic mix of short films, documentaries, comedy, and compelling dramas which showcase the incredible diversity of Transgender filmmaking.

"I am very proud of the fact that Three Dollar Bill Cinema is able to produce this film festival," says Rachael Brister, executive director of Three Dollar Bill Cinema. "It is the first film festival of its kind in the Pacific Northwest and one of only a handful of Transgender film festivals in the world."

Translations opens May 13 with the free Reality TG program and panel discussion and closes on Sunday, May 16 with the award-winning film Open, directed by Jake Yuzna. Films will screen at three Seattle venues: Capitol Hill Public Library (425 Harvard Ave. E.), Erickson Theatre (1524 Harvard Ave.), and Northwest Film Forum (1515 12th Ave.).

Reality TG explores the recent profusion of Trans people on talk shows, television, and film dramas, and especially reality television. Recent episodes of reality programs featuring Trans people as cast members will be screened, followed by a panel discussion featuring Seattle's own TV and film expert Sara Michelle Fetters, and Three Dollar Bill Cinema Executive Director Rachael Brister. The event is free and begins at 6:15 p.m. at the Capitol Hill Library.

Opening night at Capitol Hill's Erickson Theatre will feature a screening of Riot Acts. Riot Acts follows the careers of some of the best and brightest Transgender musicians playing across America today.

Cresdan Maite, the Festival's programmer, says, "Transgender film has changed and grown over the last five years. Filmmakers are developing their stories more. Documentaries are shifting from simple transition stories into larger explorations of our lives as people. This is exciting progress."
