Suspect charged in Ballard hate crime
by Mike Andrew - SGN Staff Writer

As SGN goes to press, police spokesperson Renee Witt has confirmed that Daniel Woodward, 51, of Seattle, has been charged in an assault on a Transgender woman.

The assault occurred at 3:50 p.m. on May 30, at 15th Avenue NW and NW Market Street in Ballard.

Woodward allegedly approached the woman at a bus stop, yelled slurs at her, and punched her several times.

She was taken to Ballard Swedish Hospital for examination after complaining of neck pains.

Woodward was convicted of a previous hate crime in 2003.

He was also convicted of an assault and a separate drug charge in 2004, and at least two other drug charges. In 2007, police caught him smoking crack under the Alaskan Way Viaduct.

According to Witt, police are investigating the current assault as a hate crime both because of things Woodward is alleged to have said at the scene and because of his previous record.

Witt cautioned that the final decision whether to prosecute the assault under the state's malicious harassment laws will be made by King County prosecutors.

"We investigate it as a hate crime," she said, "and then we send it to the prosecutor. They decide how to prosecute."

The suspect was arrested near NW 54th Street and 14th Avenue NW.

According to the arresting officer, Woodward appeared to be drunk.

"The suspect appeared intoxicated and had a strong odor of intoxicants," Officer Trung Nguyen said in his incident report. "He would not respond to my questions of whether he understood his rights."

The suspect remains in custody at King County Jail.

He is being held on $250,000 bail in the hate crime case, but he is also being held for violating terms of his probation in a previous felony conviction, and bail for that charge has been denied.
