Gay City readies for ride to Portland

by James Whitely - SGN Staff Writer

The Gay City Seattle to Portland (STP) Team is ready to ride!

The STP Bicycle Classic is an annual one- and two-day bicycle ride from Seattle, Washington to Portland, Oregon. The STP is considered one of the 10 biggest recreational bicycle rides in the country and is the largest multi-day ride in the Pacific Northwest.

This year the ride will take place on July 17 and 18.

Most STP participants complete the ride in two days, however; many riders attempt to complete the trek in one day - usually about 15% do.

The Gay City team will consist of 14 riders, according to Peter Jabin, the deputy director of Gay City Health Project.

"I believe five team members will do it in one day with the rest of us doing two days," Jabin told SGN.

"Just over one-third of this year's Team Gay City are doing the STP for their first time this year - myself included," said Jabin.

Team Gay City has been doing training rides every weekend in the greater Seattle area since early May. According to Jabin, the rides have ranged from 25 miles to 82.5 miles.

The 31st annual Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic is expected to have a total of 10,000 riders.

This year will mark the third year that Gay City Health Project has put together a team consisting of volunteers and supporters. Like previous years, Gay City is using the ride as an opportunity to fundraise.

Team Gay City has raised more than $30,000 in pledges since their first ride in 2008. You can still support a rider for this year.

"Folks can sponsor a member of Team Gay City right up to and even through the event," Jabin told SGN.

Gay City Health Project is a multicultural Gay men's health organization and the leading provider of HIV and STD testing in Gay and Bisexual men in King County. Their mission is to promote Gay and Bisexual men's health and prevent HIV transmission by building community, fostering communication, and nurturing self-esteem.
