High school and college GSAs celebrate LGBT History Month

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Equality Forum announced this week that high school, college, and university GSAs are back to school and working on LGBT History Month 2010 celebrations.

In collaboration with GLSEN and the GSA Network, Equality Forum - a national and international LGBT civil rights organizations with an education focus - mailed out more than 5,000 LGBT History Month celebration kits to high schools and colleges, workplace groups, community centers, and regional, state and national organizations. The kits include posters, icon lists, and ideas for creating exhibits and awareness for LGBT History Month.

Equality Forum and GLSEN are sponsoring an LGBT History Month Exhibit Contest for high school GSAs.

Beginning October 1, an LGBT icon is presented daily, with a video, bio, bibliography, downloadable images, and other resources at www.equalityforum.com. The 124 icons with resources from 2006 to 2009 are archived on the site.

"Equality Forum encourages high schools, colleges, workplace groups, community centers, and organizations to celebrate LGBT History Month, a powerful civil rights message about our community's extraordinary national and international achievements," stated Malcolm Lazin, executive director of Equality Forum. "We are the only minority community deprived of its history in schools, at home, or in religious institutions. LGBT History Month teaches our heritage, provides role models, and builds community."

In 2006, Equality Forum launched LGBT History Month along with 20 organizations who proudly display an LGBT History Month link on their websites. In 2009, over 650 nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and for-profit corporations had an LGBT History Month link, making LGBT History Month the largest collaborative project worldwide for our community.

"LGBT issues are often forgotten or sidelined in the media and our education system," said Amit Taneja, associate director of the LGBT Resource Center at Syracuse University. "Having this month-long celebration helps us recognize the many accomplishments of LGBT individuals and their contributions to society."

This year's LGBT Icons are Eric Alva, George Washington Carver, George Eastman, Sharon Farmer, Leslie Feinberg, Tom Ford, E. Lynn Harris, David Huebner, Kevin Jennings, Mara Keisling, Kiyoshi Kuromiya, Sharon J. Lubinski, Jane Lynch, Patsy Lynch, Matthew Mitcham, Jamie Nabozny, Cynthia Nixon, Catherine Opie, Sunil Babu Pant, Annise Parker, John A. Perez, Eleanor Roosevelt, Jalal al-Din Rumi, David Sedaris, Matthew Shepard, Johanna Siguroardottir, Pyotr Ilyich Tchalkovsky, Rufus Wainwright, Mel White, and Emanuel Xavier.
