Lifelong AIDS Alliance will no longer produce Gay Bingo

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

On October 5, Lifelong AIDS Alliance officials announced the agency would no longer produce Gay Bingo, the event that has been a Lifelong hallmark for 17 years.

Lifelong officials say that the Board of Directors and senior staff have spent the last three months conducting a strategic review of programs, services, and fundraising efforts to ensure they continue to meet the needs of their clients and the community.

'As we prepare for a future both challenging and rewarding, we have reduced staff, implemented across-the-board cost-savings, streamlined services, and looked at ways to strengthen our fundraising. Through this process, the Board of Directors and Executive Team at Lifelong made the decision to no longer produce Gay Bingo,' said Maurice James, president of the board. 'This was in no way an easy decision when we considered the history of the event and the support from the community. However, because of this decision, Lifelong will be in a position to focus our attention and precious resources on fundraising efforts that have the greatest financial impact on the agency and the clients we serve.'

James went on to explain that 2010 has been a year of transition and renewal for Lifelong. He said the agency has made key changes in staff leadership, increased enrollment in their insurance program by over 400 clients, reduced barriers to housing access, and lowered the number of individuals on their nutrition program waiting list by 100.

Throughout, Lifelong officials say, the top priority has always been to fulfill their mission to prevent the spread of HIV, as well as to provide practical support services and advocate for those whose lives are affected by HIV and AIDS.

Lifelong identified future fundraising efforts to include their second annual Community Breakfast in February, Dining Out for Life event in April, and the 25th Anniversary of the Seattle AIDS Walk & 5K Run in September of 2011.

The agency also expressed interest in identifying another organization that would be interested in carrying on the Gay Bingo torch.
