Robert Geller stars in local playwright's Dropped Stitch

by James Whitely - SGN Staff Writer

A Dropped Stitch
New Space Theatre
Through October 16

A Dropped Stitch, the new play written and directed by local playwright Jeff Stilwell, opened September 30 at the New Space Theatre (17517 15th Ave. NE #202) and runs through October 16. The four-person farcical play deals with gender roles and features the over-the-top catalyst character The Metro - a metrosexual neighbor - along with a mother/daughter pair and Bertram, a friend of the family.

Robert Geller plays Bertram, an 'insufferable prig - full of himself, yet infuriatingly accomplished.'

'It's my first opportunity on the stage to get that much dialogue and that much time,' said Geller about his major role.

'I felt very connected to the character,' Geller told SGN. 'I notice how passionate he is about his work; I'm a bit like that. He's not a very good listener; I'm a bit like that,' said Geller, laughing.

According to Geller, the play deals with grief, loss, gender, personal values, romanticism, and new directions.

'But it all happens in a really crazy way,' Geller told SGN. 'It's extremely witty and funny and it gets moving very quickly. & It might appear light-hearted on the surface, but like a lot of things, it's layered.'

Geller is a fan of Stilwell himself, who is a key player in the Pacific Northwest theatre scene. A Dropped Stitch is Stilwell's 16th comedy.

What impresses Geller about A Dropped Stitch and Stilwell's other works is how his understanding of men and women is apparent in his writing.

'He's really quite enlightening in his ability to capture that,' Geller told SGN.

Although this may be Geller's biggest role on stage so far in his career, he's no stranger to the public. He is the one and only track announcer at Emerald Downs, Seattle's horse racing track. As one of the more accomplished announcers in the industry, he was featured in the recent book They Call the Horses by Edie Dickenson.

'I love horse racing. I grew up with it,' Geller told SGN. Geller has been the announcer at Emerald Downs since the track opened in 1996.

According to Geller, he learned the craft living in Australia and worked for seven years in Hong Kong before taking the position at Emerald Downs.

Geller was honored and excited to be featured in Dickenson's book, and says that since the author is new to the industry, the book offers an enthusiastic, open, and unseasoned view to thoroughbred racing, through the stories of the people that call it from the little booth above the bleachers.

A Dropped Stitch runs every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday through October 16 at 8 p.m. at the New Space Theatre. Ticket price is $20. The play is presented by New Classics Theatre. For more information or to buy tickets, visit www.newclassicstheatre.org or call (425) 776-3778.
