A Dyke About Town: Average White Band nice and funky

by Mercy Moosemuzzle - SGN Contributing Writer

Average White Band
Mercy greatly enjoyed Average White Band at Jazz Alley on November 11. Klyde Jones' vocals were smooth, and his keyboards luscious. Fred 'Freddy V' Vigdor's saxes were delicious. Rocky Bryant's drum solos were amazing. Onnie McIntyre's guitar work was smart. Alan Gorrie's bass gave the group a nice bottom.

They opened with the upbeat 'When Will You Be Mine,' featuring sax and drums. 'Get It Up For Love' continued in that pace, with more nice sax. 'The World is Mine' mellowed the mood while highlighting Vigdor. Also nice and slow and sax-filled was 'Easy.' 'What Are You Going to Do For Me?' maintained that beat. Also slinky was 'It's Only a Schoolboy Crush.' 'Give Me That Thing' picked up speed and showed off bass, guitar, and sax nicely. 'We Got Work to Do' kept it up with satisfying sax. 'A Love of Your Own' slowed down and showed off more of Vigdor's sax. 'In the Beginning,' from their new album Times Square, picked up the pace. 'Pick up the Pieces' closed the concert with the group's most famous song. The encore of 'Person to Person' was satisfying and featured guitar.

Devil Be Damned
Mercy has enjoyed two other books by Ali Vali, so she was excited when she received the review copy of her new romantic thriller, Devil Be Damned. This book is the fourth in the Cain Casey series. It would have been easier to understand if Mercy had read the others first. The hero is a New Orleans Lesbian gangster. The fact that she deals in booze was hard for the sober Mercy to relate to. The book has some great sex scenes - most notable because they happen in a long-term relationship in which one woman is pregnant.

Greta Matassa
Mercy and Cuteness are really looking forward to seeing Greta Matassa at the Triple Door on November 29. Matassa was voted 'Northwest Vocalist of the Year' by Earshot Jazz six times. Greta Matassa is one of the most talented singers working in jazz today. Greta's latest CD, I Wanna be Loved from Resonance Records, remained on the national jazz charts for three months.

Don Pasquale
Mercy, Cuteness, and the gang enjoyed the Met broadcast of Don Pasquale at Thornton Place. Anna Netrebko, John Del Carlo, Matthew Polenzani, and Mariusz Keicien sang beautifully as Norina, Don Pasquale, Ernesto, and Dr. Malatesta. Mercy's friend Kapacity felt Polenzani wasn't a great actor. The other three made the comedy believable. Cuteness pointed out that Netrebko's performance was very active, as she jumped on beds and smashed a sculpture. Clearly, the whole cast had a good time.
