Natalia Kills: From Robyn fan to her opening act

by Albert Rodriguez - SGN Contributing Writer

Some girls dream of becoming a princess or a beauty queen, but Natalia Kills grew up wanting to be in a bad bitch girl gang. It's this edgy ambition that pushed the dance-pop newcomer to move out of her home at 14 and head to London, where she'd land her first industry jobs on primetime BBC television and radio. In due time, Natalia would string together all of her experience and talents into a collection of self-penned songs, then collaborate with the likes of Martin 'Cherry Cherry Boom Boom' Kierszenbaum (Lady GaGa) and Fernando Garibay (Britney Spears, U2) and release her freshman album that has already unleashed the hit 'Mirrors' and a very possible second, 'Zombies.' On Sunday, November 21, Natalia makes her Seattle debut as the supporting act for Robyn at Neumos - the show is completely sold out. Should her success continue on the path it's been on, we'll likely see her return on a headlining tour. Reached by e-mail, this is what Natalia Kills had to say when she stepped into The Music Lounge.

Albert Rodriguez: Since you'll be touring with Robyn, what's your favorite Robyn song?

Natalia Kills: 'Cry When You Get Older' is my all-time favorite! I die when I hear that song! I've been a fan of Robyn since I was 16, so it's great to finally meet her and enjoy her live show every night.

Rodriguez: Have you played in Seattle before, or is this your first time? Either way, what do you think about our city?

Natalia Kills: I have never been to Seattle! I'm quite excited to see where grunge began.

Rodriguez: How did you get your foot/heel in the door of a professional recording career?

Natalia Kills: I met Will.i.am after Perez Hilton blogged about me! He signed me to his imprint on Interscope, where I later became a Cherrytree artist working with Martin Kierszenbaum.

Rodriguez: How will you be spending the upcoming holiday?

Natalia Kills: Christmas? I hope to spend most of it stood under a chandelier of mistletoe.

Rodriguez: What are your live performances like, for those of us who've never seen you before?

Natalia Kills: It's debaucherous! I have a bad bitch girl gang & Sin City style.

Rodriguez: Do you have any guilty pleasures when touring from city to city - Starbucks runs, shopping for celeb magazines, etc.?

Natalia Kills: I actually watch a lot of documentaries on the tour bus! And, of course, shopping! Although somehow we usually end up in the local bondage/fetish shop in each city - I'm not sure why. A girl can't have enough black leather bras, can she?

Rodriguez: What advice would you give to someone who has dreams of being a musician?

Natalia Kills: Just be a musician. Whether it brings you fame and fortune, or it's just something to do after work. If that's what you love to do, you should keep doing it regardless of whether you can make a career out of it!

Rodriguez: What are your plans following the Robyn tour?

Natalia Kills: My music video for my first single, 'Mirrors,' is about to release, so I'm excited about that! Also, my show Love, Kills xx is about to launch again, so there's a lot going on!

Rodriguez: Bullying is a serious issue affecting the Gay community right now. Do you have any thoughts on how your Gay fans can deal with this?

Natalia Kills: Awful! There are two obvious ways to handle it: Brush it off as pre-civilized ignorance and ignore it like you'd ignore a screaming crackhead at a bus stop, or grab the closest sharp, heavy object and show them a physical interpretation of how painful mean comments can feel. Whatever seems appropriate at the time. In all seriousness, discriminatory behavior is wrong, and any bullying should be immediately reported to the authorities.

Rodriguez: The year is coming to a close. What are some of your favorite albums or singles of the past year?

Natalia Kills: I love Robyn and La Roux's albums! I also love Sleigh Bells, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and The Knife. Great music!

Rodriguez: What do you like shopping for more, shoes or bling?

Natalia Kills: Hmm, I'm not sure. I thought it was shoes, but I've recently developed a Pamela Love addiction, so it's a tie now!

Rodriguez: How many songs can we expect on the set list from your Seattle show?

Natalia Kills: Five, almost half my album!
