Lashes pulls off two fundraisers in one night

by James Whitely - SGN Staff Writer

Lashes drag show
December 11
R Place

On the night of December 11, although the rain may have been at its worst, Lashes, R Place's signature drag show was at it best. In addition to being a great show, Lashes was putting on not one, but two separate fundraisers - and both were rousing successes.

'This is the first time ever that two fundraisers were happening at the same time, but we did it,' said Lady Chablis, host of Lashes.

In addition to the Tree of Life fundraiser that R Place and other Capitol Hill bars are participating in - which asks for $1 donations to the Youth Suicide Prevention Program (YSPP) - the show had a goal of raising $800 on Friday and Saturday night for Rise 'n' Shine, an organization dedicated to providing emotional support and services for youths who are affected by HIV/AIDS.

Chablis met her goal of $800 and will be shopping for toys the week before Christmas for five kids - three girls and two boys, whose ages range from 11-15.

'OMG, if you see what they asked for, I think [I'll be shopping at] every store in Washington. These kids are not like average kids who want toys, which I thought would be easy - oh no, they want clothes and jewelry and makeup,' Chablis told SGN. 'One kid, 11, wanted special kinds of sheets for his bed, but thanks to the community we were able to get everything they wanted.'

The December 11 show featured Lady Chablis, who did her trademark 'church lady' number, as well as a Wanda Sykes parody. Sharon Huzbenz performed a festive holiday number among others and Donatella Howe also performed a variety of numbers.

Every year, R Place holds its own staff fundraiser where they pick one family to buy presents for for the holidays. Although not part of the Rise 'n' Shine fundraiser, Lady Chablis tied them together by telling a story of how a few Christmases ago, when Seattle was completely snowed in, Floyd, one of the managers of R Place, got in his truck and braved the snowstorm to deliver the gifts before morning.

What makes Lashes fun is that all the performers do multiple numbers that are all very different - not only showcasing their talent, but creating a true variety show. Other Lashes regulars include Eva Androgyny, Tory Marchella, and Mark 'Mom' Finley.

'It's an opportunity to show our creative talent,' Lady Chablis told SGN. 'Our show is not a set show, so it allows people to see something [new] every week.'

After a week of fundraising, R Place has raised $1,600 for YSPP.

'We're not stopping there,' Chablis told SGN.
