These days, people turn to Google - the number 1 online search engine on the web - for any manner of searches. A few years back, curious citizens figured out that they could Google themselves to find out just what the internet had to say about them. In other words, a person's 'Googlability' is a gauge of just how well-known they are.
Whether you love him or love to hate him, Perez Hilton topped this year's list as 2010's most Googled Gay in the U.S., according to The Advocate.
'In a tight race for first place with Adam Lambert, Perez Hilton takes the cake,' said Advocate writer Scott McPherson. '2010 has been a big year for Hilton, launching three new blogs - CoCoPerez, FitPerez, and TeddyHilton - all focused on a more specific market (fashion, fitness and health, and pets). Between the growth of his company, his pledge to stop bullying on Ellen, and revealing Miley's partying ways, Perez Hilton has landed himself 2010's most Googled Gay.'
Who else made the cut? This year, Advocate editors kept their list limited to only out LGBT people.
The top Googled Gays of 2010 are: 9) Antoine Dodson, internet sensation; 8) MSNBC's Rachel Maddow; 7) Alexander McQueen, British fashion designer; 6) American fashion designer Marc Jacobs; 5) international Latin hunk Ricky Martin; 4) Gay icon Elton John; 3) daytime television host Ellen DeGeneres; 2) Gay pop star Adam Lambert; and 1) Perez Hilton.
Rounding out the bottom of the list at 20 through 10, respectively, are: Steven Slater, the jetBlue flight attendant who made world-wide headlines after announcing he was quitting his job over the plane's public address system, deployed the evacuation slide at the terminal gate and slid down it; comedian Wanda Sykes; Jonathan Groff, the actor who plays Jesse St. James in the musical television series Glee; Chris Colfer, Kurt on TV's Glee; fashion designer Tom Ford; Portia de Rossi, Ellen's wife; Suze Orman, financial expert; superstar drag sensation RuPaul; British singer George Michael; Jane Lynch, everyone's favorite 'cheerio coach' on Glee; and Neil Patrick Harris, kid doctor turned Gay icon.
