Facebook co-founder engaged to Gay-rights advocate

by Shaun Knittel - SGN Associate Editor

Chris Hughes, the 27-year-old Facebook co-founder who was Mark Zuckerberg's former Harvard roommate and is said to be worth more than $500 million, is engaged to his long-time boyfriend and Gay rights advocate Sean Eldridge.

The couple, who has been together for five years, say they plan to get married in New York State as soon as it is legal to do so.

The two men made the announcement at a Freedom to Marry event held at their SoHo apartment - which included such guests as Ivanka Trump, Simon Doonan, New York state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, and Jonathan Adler.

Eldridge is the political director of Freedom to Marry.

'As you know, we can't get married in New York, so there is more of an urgency to approve Gay marriage so we can get married here,' Eldridge told guests, according to The New York Post. 'We're going to get married in the next year or two for sure - we're hoping as soon as possible.'

Hughes reportedly proposed to Eldridge while they were stuck in Thailand over the New Year holiday because of a flight delay.

'We were in Thailand in a hotel room in the north. We were delayed after two days in the snowstorm and Chris got down on one knee and proposed,' said Eldridge. 'It was very traditional and very sweet.'

President Obama once called Hughes 'my internet man,' prompting Hughes' mother to cry, and the tech genius attended a state dinner at the White House with his fiancé last year. The internet entrepreneur recently launched Jumo.com, a social networking site that helps individuals find community organizations and causes that are important to them.
